New DelhiAugust 26, 2025 08:04 PM IST First published on: Aug 26, 2025 at 08:04 PM ISTShareThe next few days could be hectic for the BJP and Modi government, with a push to make long overdue decisions on organisational changes and appointments.RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat is in the Capital for a second time this month, as part of a three-day event from August 26 to 28 for the Sangh’s centenary celebrations. On August 29, Prime Minister Narendra Modi embarks on a four-day overseas visit. As per sources, the two could use the opportunity while both are in Delhi to hold discussions on the appointments.Advertisement“All eyes are on a possible meeting between the RSS chief and the PM,” a BJP source said, pointing out that Bhagwat has been holding meetings with senior BJP leaders since arriving in Delhi Sunday.“The top brass of the RSS and BJP are also expected to discuss changes in the Union Cabinet, which is in turn interconnected to the organisational overhaul, including the appointment of a new BJP national president, and changes at Raj Bhavans,” the source said, adding that the RSS like usual would not suggest specific names but lay down “broad criteria (for selection to posts)… when asked by the BJP”.The PM will be back from his trip on September 1-2, after which the inauspicious period of pitra paksh will start. Parties usually do not make new appointments during this time, and a delay now would mean that changes in the party and government would get pushed back further.AdvertisementAs per the BJP constitution, its president can be elected after chiefs of at least 19 state units have been chosen. The states which are lagging include Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat, where infighting is believed to be making a choice difficult. Those in favour of the BJP making the changes after the 15-day pitra paksh ends cite the Vice-Presidential elections coming on September 9, which the NDA intends to utilise as a projection of ally unity, and the nine-day Navratra period beginning September 22 that is seen as auspicious.most readAmong those who met Bhagwat over the weekend was Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan. As per a PTI report, asked about this meeting by reporters in Gwalior Tuesday, Chouhan sidestepped queries over whether he would be the new BJP chief saying that he was busy handling his ministerial responsibilities.“I want to say one thing — Prime Minister Narendra Modi has entrusted me with the responsibility of looking after the Ministries of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare and Rural Development. At this moment, agriculture is in every pore of my body and farmers are my breath.”Asked about who would be the next BJP president, Chouhan said: “Neither have I ever thought of it, nor has anyone told me.”
