The courtroom battle over jailed Opposition titan Dr Kizza Besigye has exploded into fresh drama, with his lawyers announcing that their client has officially ordered a boycott of High Court judge Emmanuel Baguma, whom they accuse of serving politics instead of justice.At a fiery press conference yesterday at the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) headquarters, Besigye’s lawyers – led by Counsel Kato Tumusiime – revealed their marching orders: “We have clear instructions from our clients not to appear before a judge who has taken sides,” Tumusiime declared.The lawyers didn’t hold back. Counsel Eron Kiiza went further, thundering that Justice Baguma’s rulings were “against logic, the law, and morality,” and blasted him for snatching files from the International Crimes Division (ICD) to handle them under the Criminal Division. “The files were grabbed… and are now under his control,” Kiiza charged.A Courtroom on EdgeOn August 26, drama played out in open court when Besigye’s lawyer Frederick Mpanga admitted he couldn’t proceed without fresh instructions from Luzira Prison. His colleague, Ernest Kalibaala, had rushed to consult Besigye in his cell. “My lord, I am not in a position to proceed without the applicants’ final instructions,” Mpanga told Justice Baguma – forcing an adjournment.Even state prosecutors Thomas Jatiko and Richard Birivumbuka didn’t object, and the judge grudgingly granted the delay: “I have carefully listened to both counsel. The request is hereby granted.”The Root of the Bad BloodThe meltdown began when Justice Baguma denied Besigye mandatory bail, ruling the FDC founder had not yet clocked the 180 days in detention required.
