The Mayor said the injured fireman was not provided care at GMCH-32 and demanded that the matter be put on record, seeking clear accountability from hospital authorities.Senior Deputy Mayor Jasbir Singh Bunty on Tuesday slammed the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation (MC) for its “negligence and mismanagement” while dealing with the unclaimed bodies.Addressing the MC House, Bunty claimed that in March 2024, the Finance and Contract Committee (F&CC) had passed an agenda appointing a Junior Engineer (JE) as the nodal officer to perform the cremation of unclaimed bodies. However, even after one and a half years, neither cremations nor immersion of ashes had been carried out.He pointed out that earlier the responsibility lay with the All India Seva Samiti, which performed the rituals at a nominal cost of Rs 830 per body, including Rs 400 for the ambulance, Rs 400 for clothing, and Rs 30 for cremation expenses. The NGO had cremated 588 bodies over six years at an approximate cost of Rs 4.8 lakh. In contrast, if the MC had undertaken the same job, the expense would have ballooned to around Rs 21 lakh, the Senior Deputy Mayor claimed.Despite Rs 3.5 lakh being sanctioned in March 2024, the ashes of unclaimed bodies continue to remain piled up at cremation grounds, which Bunty described as not only mismanagement but also “a matter of corruption and an insult to faith”.Taking note of the seriousness, the Mayor constituted a committee and fixed a meeting with the Commissioner for next Tuesday. The House also passed an agenda to consider handing the work back to the earlier NGO.Mayor flags negligence in fireman’s treatmentAlso, in the House meeting, Mayor Harpeet Kaur Babla raised concern over the alleged denial of treatment to a firefighter injured during a recent fire incident in Sector 20.The Mayor said the injured fireman was not provided care at GMCH-32 and demanded that the matter be put on record, seeking clear accountability from hospital authorities. Stay updated with the latest - Click here to follow us on Instagram© The Indian Express Pvt LtdTags:chandigarh
