Earlier this year, she played in sunflower-inspired sneakers and hair accessories at the Australian Open and debuted a cherry blossom motif during the French Open. At Roland-Garros, she explained the theme, telling reporters, per Sports Illustrated, “The shoes are Sakura-themed, which is just in time for spring, which is Sakura season. It follows the flower story that we have throughout the year.”Eurasia Sport Images//Getty ImagesShe also pointed out another detail: “I don’t know if you can see from all the way over here, but I did my nails. They’re Sakura-themed too. I’m really sticking to the flower story that we have.”Beyond her fashion, Osaka emphasized how significant the US Open feels to her personally. When asked in her pre-tournament press conference what memories she might share with her daughter, Shai, in the future, she said, “I think what I would tell her is this is probably my favorite and the greatest tournament for me. I have so many really cool memories here. I also have some not-so-cool memories here. For me, the US Open is an embodiment of New York, and it’s very loud and busy, but it's also really special.”
