General Secretary of the governing People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C), Bharrat Jagdeo, has issued one of his strongest appeals yet to first-time voters, urging them to recognise the stakes of what he described as one of Guyana’s most consequential elections in years.“I urge you to talk to the parents…to the relatives, speak to them, the first-time voters, to make sure they understand what we are putting at risk here,” Jagdeo said at a public meeting in Enmore, East Coast Demerara, on Monday.Stressing the importance of youth engagement, he added, “Many of them have not seen the dark days of the PNC. They may not even be confronted by the racism of the PNC that we’re trying to overcome.”He added, “Talk to every, go to every home. Make sure that people show up,” he told supporters, “You have to show up in large numbers, because these are not easy elections. We have everyone aligned against the PPP – four parties from the other side.”Jagdeo hailed the PPP as the only political force capable of holding Guyana together across lines of race, class, and geography. Invoking the Party’s founder, the PPP General Secretary added, “Cheddi Jagan fought against that. He fought against that because he recognised that the moment we break the racism in Guyana, then the People’s Progressive Party will remain in office for a very, very long time.”RECORD OF DELIVERY AND NEW PROMISESThe PPP General Secretary underscored what he described as the PPP’s record of economic expansion and fulfilment of campaign pledges. “By tonight, everyone of you here would know that we have delivered on those promises. We’ve had more people working, 50,000 house lots prepared that we promised, and in the next term, we plan to build 40,000 homes,” he said.He cited the creation of thousands of jobs since 2020, the restoration of the children’s grant, the doubling of old-age pensions, and the reversal of what he called “hardship taxes.” He promised further investments: $200,000 in annual school support per child, expanded public assistance, universal scholarships, and grants to help families build or improve their homes.“We have a glorious future in this country,” Jagdeo declared. “We are uniting people… people are listening because they understand what the PPP means to the country. Without the PPP, there is no stabilising force.”Jagdeo accused his opponents of working together behind the scenes to weaken the PPP and block its agenda. “They know that if they can bring us back to the period in 2011 when we controlled the presidency, but we did not have the majority in the Parliament, that they can basically stop everything,” he warned. He cautioned young people not to be misled by opposition tactics or social media appearances. “That’s the generation that often goes on social media and some can easily be carried away by someone who posts a nice picture of themselves or a fancy vehicle,” he said.“At the day after the elections, you need competent people to manage this country.”The PPP General Secretary closed with a call for vigilance, discipline, and overwhelming turnout. The post Jagdeo makes passionate appeal to first-time voters appeared first on News Room Guyana.
