Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.A second report was later issued by France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS), which listed it as a magnitude 5.1 earthquake. A third agency, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, reported the same quake at magnitude 5.0.Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage.Moderate shaking probably occurred in Kadena (pop. 13,700) located 2 km from the epicenter, Okinawa (pop. 125,500) 3 km away, Chatan (pop. 27,800) 6 km away, and Yomitan (pop. 40,500) 6 km away.In Ishikawa (pop. 22,400) located 8 km from the epicenter, Gushikawa (pop. 65,300) 9 km away, Katsuren-haebaru (pop. 34,200) 10 km away, Ginowan (pop. 91,800) 11 km away, and Naha (pop. 317,400) 19 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.Update Thu, 28 Aug 2025, 03:18Seismic-like event, possible earthquake, reported few minutes ago near Naha, Okinawa, JapanUnconfirmed quake or seismic-like event reported: 27 km northeast of Naha, Okinawa, Japan, 6 minutes agoWe are receiving unverified early reports of ground shaking possibly caused by seismic activity in or near Naha, Okinawa, Japan on 28 Aug 2025 (GMT) at approximately 03:12 GMT.There are no details yet on the magnitude or depth of this possible quake. It is commonly measured on the so-called Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale (MMI) ranging from 1 (not felt) to 10 (extreme shaking), and given in Roman numerals as I,II,...IX, X, and often displayed with color codes ranging from light blue to dark red.Earthquake intensity depends mainly on the magnitude and depth of the quake as well as the distance from the epicenter: The further away, the less shaking intensity occurs.Read more about the MMI scale!Number of reports by intensityShaking intensityNumber of reportsMin-Max distance from epicenter (*)Average distance (*)I: Not felt143–43 km (26–26 mi)43 km (26 mi)II: Very weak shaking342–820 km (26–510 mi)303 km (188 mi)III: Weak shaking534–45 km (21–28 mi)41 km (25 mi)IV: Light shaking734–54 km (21–33 mi)46 km (28 mi)V: Moderate shaking146–46 km (29–29 mi)46 km (29 mi)Notes(*) Reports are filtered to exclude those that are likely highly inaccurate or esaggerated.Only reports with latitude/longitude coordinate positions given (19 in total) could be used for geographic statistics.I didn't feel itI felt this quakeIf you were near the epicenter and felt it, please share your experience and submit a short "I felt it" report! When aftershocks are detected, we will update this section. What are aftershocks?Larger earthquakes (above magnitude 5 or so) such as this one are usually followed by smaller ones known as aftershocks that occur in the same area during the days, weeks, months or even years after the main shock.[More info]What about this quake?Based on its magnitude, the fault that was active during the quake likely ruptured beneath a surface area of approximately 10 km2 (4 square miles) as a first-order estimate. The length of the rupture zone thus was probably around 5 km (3 mi).[More info]Recorded aftershocks, latest first (0 quake)Aug 28, 2025 12:12 pm (GMT +9)17 minutes ago - felt5.031 km0 km - This quakeEast China Sea, Okinawa, 28 km W of Iejima Island, JapanMain Shock (this quake)MoreMap of aftershocksPrevious quakes in the same area of this earthquakeStrongest in 2 yearsThe earthquake was the strongest to hit this part of  Japan in over 2 years.
