After nearly two months of construction, Walt Disney World Resort is officially making efforts to hide work in Frontierland from Magic Kingdom Park guests. Walt Disney Imagineers started draining the Rivers of America and demolishing Tom Sawyer Island just days after the attractions closed permanently on July 7, 2025.At D23 Expo 2024, Walt Disney World Resort announced that the Rivers of America, Tom Sawyer Island, and Liberty Square Riverboat would be replaced with two Cars (2006) rides. We now know that this part of Frontierland will be called Piston Peak National Park and include a rally race thrill ride and a family-friendly attraction. The area will be inspired by the natural beauty of America’s national parks, and early concept art suggests it will incorporate some existing parts of the Rivers of America, including barrel bridges and water features.Credit: DisneyAs of late August 2025, Walt Disney Imagineers had fully drained the Rivers of America, tagged props on Tom Sawyer Island for demolition or archival preservation, and moved the Liberty Square Riverboat to a backstage dock behind Magic Kingdom Park. On August 28, Inside the Magic reported that crews had officially started removing the Liberty Belle track from the riverbed.Yep this hurts to seeYep this hurts to see pic.twitter.com/JhDrdjoJSh— Evan Patel (@EvanPatel11) August 28, 2025However, Disney Parks fans might not get to peek at the ongoing demolition for much longer. According to BlogMickey, crews have begun installing scaffolding around the riverbed, eventually blocking Magic Kingdom Park guests from viewing the Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island construction. The first pieces of scaffolding have reportedly appeared around the boardwalk near Tiana’s Bayou Adventure. The structure doesn’t block guests’ view yet, but considering the rapid speed at which construction here has progressed, it probably won’t be long. Outside the perimeter of Magic Kingdom Park, crews have bulldozed hundreds, if not thousands, of trees for an equipment staging lot and a trailer office complex. This area serves as a home base for both the Piston Peak National Park construction and the development of a Disney Villains land “beyond Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.” Earlier this month, crews cleared even more trees for what will eventually be the footprint of the Disney Villains land.
