After fully draining the Rivers of America, Walt Disney World Resort has begun removing the Liberty Square Riverboat tracks from Magic Kingdom Park. The Liberty Square Riverboat, Tom Sawyer Island, and Rivers of America closed in early July to make way for a new Cars (2006) area in Frontierland.Walt Disney Imagineers announced plans for the two brand-new Cars attractions at D23 Expo 2024. Over the last year, Walt Disney World Resort has slowly unveiled plans for Piston Peak National Park, a section of Frontierland inspired by the natural beauty of America’s national parks. The area will feature a rally race thrill ride, a family-friendly attraction, and awe-inspiring natural landscaping incorporating existing features like barrel bridges and parts of the Rivers of America.Credit: DisneyConstruction began in earnest weeks before the official closure of Rivers of America, Tom Sawyer Island, and the Liberty Square Riverboat. In June, Imagineers bulldozed hundreds, if not thousands, of trees on the perimeter of Magic Kingdom Park to build a gravel equipment staging lot and a trailer office complex. This area will serve as the home base for the construction of Piston Peak National Park and the ongoing development of a Disney Villains land “beyond Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.” Credit: DisneyAfter the closures in July, construction walls appeared around the Rivers of America in Magic Kingdom Park. Imagineers were spotted surveying Tom Sawyer Island, tagging props for archival preservation or destruction. Over the last two months, Magic Kingdom Park guests have slowly watched the water levels in the Rivers of America go down until this week, when the riverbed was finally dry.Now that the water has disappeared, Walt Disney Imagineers are working on the next demolition phase: removing the Liberty Square Riverboat tracks. Although the Liberty Belle was an authentic, functioning steamboat, it traveled on a circular track around the Rivers of America. On Thursday, August 28, WDWNT reported that crews had officially removed the first piece of Liberty Square Riverboat track from the Rivers of America site at Magic Kingdom Park. There are still a few puddles scattered throughout the area (possibly from rainwater), but heavy construction equipment and building supplies have replaced most of the water. More track may have already been cleared from the other side of Tom Sawyer Island, but this area is not visible to Magic Kingdom Park guests. As for the Liberty Belle itself, the boat recently moved from a temporary spot in a canal off the Seven Seas Lagoon to a backstage dock behind Magic Kingdom Park. Despite rumors that the Liberty Square Riverboat had been demolished, aerial imagery shows that the boat remains untouched in the water. The backstage dock does have a dry dock for vehicle maintenance, but another Walt Disney World Resort watercraft is currently using this space. Disney hasn’t said whether it plans to preserve, reimagine, or destroy the Liberty Belle.
