Horizon will enable select companies to use their tokenised funds as collateral to borrow against stablecoin loans.The first cohort of companies includes Circle, VanEck, and WisdomTree.Stani Kulechov, the co-founder and CEO of Aave Labs, told DL News that the company put its Arc plans on hold after the blowback from the collapse of crypto exchange FTX in 2022.“The market grew to an extent, but then all of the institutions were less eager,” he said. “We kept improving the idea, though. Horizon is Arc 2.0.”These days, institutions are as eager as ever to absorb the industry.There is more than $26 billion circulating in tokenised versions of stocks, bonds, commodities, and private credit, according to data from RWA.xyz.‘The true potential of RWAs isn’t just in tokenisation, it’s in what you can do once those assets are onchain.’BlackRock, the $12 trillion asset manager, issued its tokenised money market fund in 2024, and it has already ballooned to over $2 billion.In April, Ripple and the global management consultancy Boston Consulting Group predicted the tokenisation niche to reach $19 trillion by 2033.Others, however, have suggested that such bold claims are starry-eyed.“Sure, anything is possible,” Sabih Behzad, head of digital assets at Deutsche Bank, told DL News in April. “Is it probable? That’s the question.”For Behzad and many others, the market’s ceiling is based primarily on the fact that there isn’t much else to do on the blockchain once these more traditional assets are onchain.Horizon is an attempt to build out the tokenisation of real-world assets.“The true potential of RWAs isn’t just in tokenisation, it’s in what you can do once those assets are onchain,” Centrifuge CEO, Bhaji Illuminati, shared with DL News.Centrifuge will host two of its tokenised funds on Horizon.Superstate, Ant Digital Technologies, Ethena, KAIO, OpenEden, Securitize, Hamilton Lane, and Chainlink are all participating in the venture as well.After going through standard know-your-customer compliance rules via each of the issuers, investors will be able to borrow three different stablecoins in a customised version of Aave: Circle’s USDC, Ripple’s RLUSD, and Aave’s own GHO token.Kulechov hopes to add additional types of collateral, including private equity.“Being able to tokenise something like a SpaceX, Neuralink or Stripe, could be interesting because not a lot of people have access to that before they go public,” he said.Liam Kelly is a DeFi Correspondent at DL News.
