Gudalur division steps up efforts to trap tiger

The Gudalur forest division has intensified its efforts to trap a tiger that is alleged to have killed around 20 heads of cattle in Devarsholai region.The animal, believed to be around two years old, is alleged to have killed cattle over a two month period, and recently, following a public outcry, the Forest Department announced that based on the advice of the Chief Wildlife Warden of the State, efforts would be taken to capture the animal and relocate it away from the area.To monitor the tiger’s movements, camera traps have been installed in and around the Devarsolai area where it had been sighted, while pug marks and other indicators of the tiger’s movement are also being constantly assessed, the department officials from the Gudalur range said.Additionally, five cages have been set up in an attempt to capture the animal, with further cages provided by the Kerala Forest Department also put to use. Forest officials stated that camera traps have been fixed in over 50 locations around the area where the tiger was last believed to have been spotted, while kumki elephants from the Theppakadu forest range are also being used to conduct patrols to help track the animal.The cage, brought to Gudalur, has been provided by the Kerala Forest Department and is around 30-feet in length, 15-feet in height and 10-feet wide, officials stated, with more than 50 field staff being deployed to keep tabs on the situation.P.
