By Mulengera ReportersDuring the Thursday CEC session, President Museveni in his capacity as the NRM National Chairman managed to cajole a few contestants, including his own brother Nzeire, out of the race. Other little-known contestants made it clear to the veteran leader from Rwakitura that joblessness was their problem and were offered RDC posts in order to quit the race. Contestants on a position would be called in and each given three minutes to create an impression of themselves and where necessary, even be asked a few clarification questions. When it came to the position of 2nd national vice chairperson, for which Speaker Anita Among and her predecessor Rebecca Kadaga are battling, Gen Museveni offered a quick deal. He asked the two ladies to sit down and agree for one to leave it for the other. He made a clear irretractable offer to give whoever bows out a CEC slot to be among the 5 nominees he is mandated and authorized to select in his capacity as the founding Chairman of the Movement. With this Presidential assurance, they would both end up in CEC without having to continue with the very exhausting battle they are currently engaged in. Personal egos prevailed as they both defied the President’s advice and none of them accepted to quit for the other. This simply means that they are going to fight to the bitter end-and that exhaustive fight is going to produce one loser and one winner as opposed to the Museveni de-escalation deal that would produce two winners and no loser. Museveni must have felt insulted and disrespected because many at the CEC session considered his proposal reasonable and the best one, only to be disregarded by the two relentless ladies from the East. When it came to contestants for Buganda region, Gen Museveni immediately blew up businessman Moses Karangwa by making pronouncements that must have made the man from Kayunga to feel emotionally deflated. The big man made his pronouncement as Karangwa and other contestants walked into the meeting room. “Eeh Karangwa you are also here? You have a lot of land problems of marginalizing other people and this is something [Kayunga Woman MP Idah] Nantaba has been reporting to me for sometime but then more recently, we got a petition from some people accusing you of perpetrating land injustice and the matter is being handled by Gen Nalweyiso who has been inquiring into it. In fact, we are planning to call you here to face your accusers so that we get to the bottom of that problem,” sources quoted the President as confronting the ruling party’s Kayunga Chairman who is seeking to become NRM party Vice Chairman for Buganda region.
