(Credit Meganath Venkatesan)Madras Day 2025 Date and History: Every year on August 22, Madras Day is observed to commemorate the founding of Madras (now Chennai) in Tamil Nadu in 1639. This year, we will mark the 22nd anniversary of Madras Day as well as the 386th anniversary of the city’s founding — on Friday, August 22, 2025.On this day in 1639, the East India Company (EIC) bought Madrasapatnam from local monarchs and was a step toward building the British Empire in India over the next several centuries. After British rule ended in 1947, the state and city remained known as Madras, and were formed from the larger Madras presidency, which had included parts of other South Indian states. The state was formally called Tamil Nadu in 1969, and the capital city of Madras changed its name to Chennai in 1996.The idea of a Madras Day was first suggested by Chennai-based journalists Vincent D’Souza, editor of the Mylapore Times (a local newspaper), and Sashi Nair, director and editor of the Press Institute of India, to historian S. Muthiah during a conversation at Muthiah’s home in 2004. The day has been observed annually since then, commemorating the city’s vibrant history, legacy, and cultural significance that have shaped what we now recognise as Chennai.
