Rio Ngumoha became Liverpool’s youngest-ever goalscorer with his winner at Newcastle, as well as the fourth 16-year-old to score in Premier League history.Ngumoha surpassed the feats of Ben Woodburn nine years ago when he found the back of the net in extraordinary circumstances at St James’ Park.Aged just 16 years and 361 days, the winger became the youngest player ever to score for Liverpool’s first team, as well as knocking Michael Owen off the top for the club’s youngest-ever league goalscorer. His achievement was even more significant as it saw him become the fourth-youngest ever goalscorer in Premier League history.Ngumoha is now the fourth 16-year-old to ever find the back of the net in the current English top flight, as well as being the fourth-youngest player to do so. James Vaughan (16 years, 270 days), James Milner (16 years, 356 days) and Wayne Rooney (16 years, 360 days) are the only other players to have done so.Rooney is the only player to have scored a winning goal in the Premier League at a younger age, having done so for Everton back in 2002 when he was a day younger than Ngumoha. It is a remarkable distinction for Liverpool’s new No. 73, who told All Red Video that he would not buy into the hype around his early impact.“You can’t get too carried away with all the noise, because at the end of the day I probably do that finish 100 times on the training ground so it’s no different with the fans [here],” Ngumoha explained.“But obviously the fans backing you there, it’s just crazy.“I’m 16 but I don’t want my age to show that I can’t play with the older players. I want to prove a point that I can play with not just people my age but many ages above.“But like I said, there are people at the club who are always helping me and I’m always learning and improving, so I can’t complain.”While Arne Slot will remain cautious over his use of a player who only turns 17 on Friday, the club’s faith in Ngumoha is such that they have eschewed any plans to sign a replacement for Luis Diaz.Despite links with moves for Paris Saint-Germain’s Bradley Barcola and Real Madrid‘s Rodryo, there is no intention to block the teenager’s pathway.
