Walt Disney World Resort has filed a new construction permit for its failed immersive hotel, Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser. The luxury landlocked cruise experience opened in March 2022 and closed less than two years later in September 2023. Disney first started teasing an immersive Star Wars role-playing experience in the late 2010s. At D23 Expo 2019, then-head of Disney Parks and Resorts Bob Chapek announced that a luxury resort called the Halcyon would open at Walt Disney World Resort in 2021. The opening was delayed to March 2022 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Credit: DisneyAt first, sailings on Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser sold out almost immediately. Despite costing over $5,000 per cabin for just two nights, many Lucasfilm fans were fully sold on a personalized adventure in a Galaxy Far, Far Away. Unfortunately, the enthusiasm didn’t last. The price tag scared away many Walt Disney World Resort guests and made it hard for even the most devoted Star Wars fans to return to the hotel. In May 2023, Walt Disney World Resort announced that Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser would embark on its final voyage in September, permanently marking the luxury hotel a multimillion-dollar failed experiment. Some Disney Parks fans hoped the building could be converted into a normal Disney Resort hotel or a themed dining experience. However, its lack of windows, tiny rooms, low capacity, and inconvenient backstage location (near Disney’s Hollywood Studios) made it an unlikely candidate for a guest-facing project. Earlier this year, news broke that the Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser building was being converted into secondary offices for Walt Disney Imagineering. On August 27, Walt Disney World Resort filed a construction permit that is assumed to be related to the hotel overhaul. This firm has partnered with Walt Disney World Resort on several projects, including the transformation of DinoLand U.S.A. into Pueblo Esperana at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park. Walt Disney World Resort hasn’t shared any other details about the ongoing renovations at the Star Wars hotel. However, it’s unlikely that the towering building near Disney’s Hollywood Studios will be accessible to guests ever again. Was Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser doomed from the start?
