REPORT: Disney Parks Considering Bringing Back Pre-COVID Annual Pass

Wait 5 sec.

We have an update on the return of one Disney resort’s pre-COVID annual pass.Disney’s post-COVID theme park landscape looks markedly different from its pre-pandemic days. The Magical Express is gone, free FastPasses are dead, and prices are – in most cases – higher than ever.Credit: DisneyAnnual passes have also undergone huge changes. Before the pandemic, Disney’s most diehard parkgoers could purchase passes at every resort. While some lower-tier passes limited the days on which guests could visit the park, the top tier would provide unlimited access, with locals and enthusiastic tourists able to pop in and out of the parks as they pleased. When the likes of Walt Disney World Resort and Disneyland Resort closed down at the peak of the pandemic, annual pass sales were paused. These remained on pause even once the parks reopened, only for Disney to later announce that they were gone for good and new pass systems would take their place. At Disneyland Resort, this takes the form of Magic Keys – passes that, even at their highest level (and highest price point), don’t allow access to Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure every day of the year. Passholders must now also book reservations for the days they’d like to visit, with these slots often filling up fast for in-demand days.Credit: Kaleb Tapp, UnsplashThe same is true at Disney World. While Disney’s biggest theme park resort has introduced “Good To Go” days that allow passholders entry without reservations, as well as relaxing the rules to allow reservation-free entry after 2 p.m. (except on Saturdays and Sundays at Magic Kingdom), guests still aren’t happy that the more expensive passes come with less obvious benefits. However, even the most frustrated Disneyland or Disney World guests should remember the fact that it could be a lot worse – they could be Tokyo Disney Resort locals, instead.Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea (which are both operated by The Oriental Land Company under a Disney licensing deal) have failed to restore their annual pass since the COVID-19 pandemic.Credit: Tokyo DisneyWith multi-day tickets only offered sporadically, guests must purchase one-day tickets whenever they want to enjoy the likes of Tokyo DisneySea’s Fantasy Springs area and Journey to the Center of the Earth, or Tokyo Disneyland’s Pooh’s Hunny Hunt or Splash Mountain.Tokyo Disney’s one-day tickets are famously much more fairly priced than those in Florida or Anaheim. At present, a day at the parks can cost as little as 7,900 yen (USD $53), with The Oriental Land Company (OLC) also considering lowering these prices further to lure in more guests. However, for guests used to the pre-COVID days of unlimited entry, even the more affordable one-day tickets can add up in price with time.Credit: DisneyIn recent months, there have been whispers that Tokyo Disney Resort may restore its annual pass.Earlier this year, Wataru Takahashi, president of the OLC, confirmed that the company is exploring “how to encourage devoted fans to return” as part of a wider effort to reassess its approach to guest engagement. He’s since provided another update. According to Nikkei, Takahashi has noted that “we cannot decide (at this point) to restart” the annual pass system.Deciding whether or not to bring the pass back apparently hinges on its impact on Tokyo Disney Resort’s capacity. The parks lowered the capacity levels during COVID-19 and has yet to bring them up to pre-pandemic standards, instead deciding to focus on higher quality experiences than a high quantity of visitors. But with Tokyo Disney Resort reportedly facing attendance issues in recent months – despite wowing guests with the likes of Rapunzel’s Lantern Festival, Peter Pan’s Never Land Adventure, Anna & Elsa’s Frozen Journey, and Fairy Tinker Bell’s Busy Buggies when Fantasy Springs opened in 2024, plus the always impressive Enchanted Tale of Beauty and the Beast at Tokyo Disneyland – it may just be time to fill that attendance with more dedicated regular guests.Do you think Tokyo Disney Resort should bring back its annual pass? The post REPORT: Disney Parks Considering Bringing Back Pre-COVID Annual Pass appeared first on Inside the Magic.
