Liverpool FC Transfer Debate: Forward options and who can leave?

Wait 5 sec.

There is just over a week remaining for Liverpool to complete any summer transfer business, but what will happen in that time? The Reds have seen plenty of ins and outs this summer, with Florian Wirtz the standout signing and Trent Alexander-Arnold among those to depart.Liverpool’s pursuit of Newcastle striker Alexander Isak is ongoing, but several players could yet depart Anfield before the September 1 deadline. Here, This Is Anfield trio Matt Ladson (@mattladson), Joanna Durkan (@JoannaDurkan_) and Henry Jackson (@HenryJackson87) discuss the remainder of the transfer window, from Isak to other business. Who should Liverpool sign if they don’t get Isak?JOANNA: For me it would be Julian Alvarez. He would fit perfectly into the side and has the versatility that Slot looks for in any new signing. He’s a proven goalscorer, has Premier League experience and is willing to do the dirty work of tracking back and closing down defenders – Diego Simeone’s influence for you!I’m quite far down the Isak rabbit hole, but a few weeks back I would have voted for the Argentine over the Swede and I’m willing to do so again.HENRY: I’m with Joanna on Alvarez – he feels like a great fit.He is selfless but also scores goals, and while I still want Isak more than anyone, he would be the ideal backup option.Rumours of unrest at Atletico Madrid aren’t a bad thing!MATT: Alvarez was my choice before the summer, but seeing the way Slot is looking to develop the team he might not fit now, he’s very different to Isak.Rodrygo has never seemed like a serious link, but if the interest is there and he comes in on the left and Ekitike stays central then that would work for me. Which other positions do Liverpool need to strengthen in?JOANNA: Even if we sign Isak or another striker, I do feel we are lacking on the left wing after letting Diaz leave – that has to mean another comes in, surely? You don’t want to block Ngumoha’s pathway into the squad but he’s still only 16 and you cannot place the pressure of scoring on him at this level. If Marc Guehi signs, we have enough depth at centre-back to keep me comfortable, but if not I might be left feeling a little uneasy – even with the options you mention, Matt!HENRY: Centre-back stands out clearly for me, with Guehi a brilliant signing if we get it done.He is experienced but also relatively young still, and while not the biggest, there is a calmness about him that I like.I don’t trust Ibou to stay fit for long periods, even though he was better on that front last season, and Virg is now 34 and needs to be managed sensibly. Not signing a centre-back would be a massive error – Giovanni Leoni is a teenager – and Liverpool would need their regulars fit almost every week to win the league.MATT: I’m not overly worried about centre-back, with Virgil, Ibou, Leoni, plus Endo and Gomez able to play there. Guehi would be ideal to give us four very strong options – and also future-proof the position.I’d like to see a lot more rotation this season, especially in Champions League, so having two for every position would be absolutely ideal. Would you keep hold of Chiesa? HENRY: I don’t think this is up for debate now, considering Ben Doak has also left alongside Diaz.Liverpool’s attacking depth isn’t great and Chiesa is a good player when fit, not to mention being so popular with his teammates. There is a chance that he won’t fire, and that injuries continue to emerge, but I would be shocked if we sold him, especially after that Bournemouth goal.MATT: As things stand, yes, but should one or even two attackers come in then he probably isn’t needed. But it seems like he’ll be staying and that’s fine, he could always go out in January.JOANNA: Yes. I think there is value in keeping hold of a player who is well liked by the players and has a strong connection with the fans.If he is happy to stay and have a squad role I cannot see it as a detriment. He would offer depth, and let’s not forget how good of a player he can be.The bigger question is, will Slot be willing to trust him more than last season? Is it time to sell Elliott?MATT: Not if another attacker doesn’t come in! But for all parties it probably is time.JOANNA: For his benefit, I’d say yes. He clearly loves and adores the club, he’s living out his childhood dream, but I can’t see Slot changing his opinion on him.Sadly, he’s not going to grow any taller or become any faster, which limits his role. I do believe he would be better off finding a club which plays to his strengths.Again, he’s another player you can trust to have a squad role and has had his fair share of big moments. If Liverpool don’t reinforce their forward line as we hope they will, then keep him.HENRY: I agree with the others here – it’s just the right time for Elliott to move on.I love him as a player, and if he had the pace of Salah he would be twice the footballer he is currently, but it is hard to see regular starts for him.He can be great for someone lower down the league or abroad. Should anyone else move on before the deadline?JOANNA: I think the obvious one is Kostas, we don’t really need three left-backs, do we? Even Slot laughed about it with reporters!I’d expect to see Calvin Ramsay and Rhys Williams also find new homes, they need to find somewhere they can thrive and play regularly.HENRY: Yeah, Tsimikas is the only other name that jumps out to me of the senior players. With Kerkez brought in, it is hard to see how he will play at all moving forward, unless injuries strike at left-back.Liverpool’s squad doesn’t feel the deepest, so selling others wouldn’t make much sense.MATT: If Danns isn’t going to get game time then he needs a good loan move. Could that be a Premier League side, I’m not sure?We could always give him to Wolves, allow them to sell Strand Larsen to Newcastle, and finally get the ball moving on Isak…
