Actor Usha Nadkarni, who is best known for her role in the hit TV series Pavitra Rishta, spoke about her youth in Mumbai, growing up with a strict mother and an even stricter father. Although she didn’t describe him as abusive, she described several incidents of suffering physical abuse at his hands when she was a child. Appearing on Bharti Singh and Haarsh Limbachiyaa’s podcast, Usha said that her father would beat her and her two siblings with whatever object he could lay his hands on. He once beat her brother unconscious, and attacked her with a ‘koita’ knife (machete).Usha said that her father was an Air Force officer, and her mother was a teacher. There would be hell to pay even if the newspaper at home wasn’t folded perfectly after being read. “If he found the newspaper to be crumpled or crooked in any way, he would lose his temper and tear it up. If he saw that our schoolbooks weren’t kept in neat rows, he would tear them up in anger. One of us would be beaten up, and the other two would run. Once, my brother was being beaten up for some reason, and I tried to stop him. He attacked me with a ‘koita’. You know, one of those knives with a curved edge? I got injured on my arm, and I had a play the next day. I went to perform with the injury.” She also revealed that her father once beat her brother unconscious, and was immediately horrified at his temper. “He would bring us special ice cream after a particularly bad beating,” she said in an earlier interview with Pinkvilla.Usha said that both her parents were against the idea of her becoming an actor. When she first broached the subject, her mother threw all her clothes out into the street and kicked her out of the house. She left, and stayed with a friend until her father came to visit her and brought her back after a week. She said that she was so terrified of him, she ran away and hid when some of her friends came over unannounced, to ask permission for her to accompany them on a picnic. Usha, 79, lives by herself in Mumbai.
