5-year-old girl electrocuted after pole falls on her near Gudiyatham

A five-year-old girl was electrocuted a damaged electric pole with power supply in the cablest fell on her at Nathamedu village near Gudiyatham town in Vellore on Thursday.The deceased girl has been identified as K. Navya, daughter of S. Kumaran, 45, a mason, and K. Janaki, 42. The couple have four daughters. Initial inquiry revealed that landowner B. Athiramulu, 70, a resident of Nathamedu village, had roped in a few workers to cut a dry coconut tree in his land. The workers were cutting the tree when chopped portions of the tree fell on the electrical pole.In the impact, the Tangedco pole fell on the stretch where Navya was playing in front of her house. Along with a stray dog, Navya was electrocuted. The incident happened around 9.30 a.m.Immediately, neighbours and residents alerted Gudiyatham Taluk police and Tangedco officials, who rushed to the spot. Power supply to the electrical pole on the stretch was disconnected to prevent any further mishaps.Police inspected the spot and sent the body to the Government Medical College Hospital in Vellore for a postmortem. Work to replace a damaged electrical pole is being done to resume the power supply in the area. A case was registered and a further probe is under way.Published - August 29, 2025 05:30 am IST
