As a first step, he or she should talk to other people before making a decision,” Daniels said.Over 25,000 cybercrime cases have been registered in Surat city last year wherein over Rs 170 crore was stolen by criminals, Cyber Crime Police Inspector D V Gamit said on Tuesday.He was speaking at a seminar, ‘Stay safe online: Cyber awareness for women and senior citizens’, organised by the Women’s Wing of the Southern Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SGCCI) in Surat.Speaking at the event, Surat Cyber Cell Assistant Commissioner of Police Sweta Daniels said that cybercrimes affect the economic stability of the country. “For doing any financial activities online, one has to think before making any decision. In India, a cybercrime takes place every 7 minutes. Russia is the hotbed of cybercrime incidents as it tops the world, while India falls in the 10th position.” In his presentation, he explained about 20 different types of cyber frauds and shared tips to avoid falling prey to online frauds.Talking to The Indian Express, Gamit said, “There are mainly three types of cybercrime cases – social media-related fraud, financial fraud and cyber terrorism. Among the cybercrime cases registered in Surat, the majority are related to investment fraud and task fraud, which are currently trending. In investment fraud schemes involving gold, shares, and other commodities, cyber crooks offer to sell the final product at a lower price. While in task fraud, users are instructed to like and follow specific videos on certain channels, and to encourage others to follow them, they initially offer a few hundred dollars.
