Double Paralympic gold medallist and defending world champion Sumit Antil will lead the Indian squad for the upcoming World Para Athletics Championships being hosted by the country for the first time. The Paralympic Committee of India (PCI) announced the 73-member team on Wednesday with a couple of notable omissions including three-time Paralympics medallist high jumper Mariyappan Thangavelu and double Paralympics medallist Sharad Kumar.While Thangavelu pulled out due to some changes made in his jumping technique, Sharad is focusing on Asian Para Games next year and didn’t participate in the selection trials. The championship is set to be held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here from September 27 to October 5.Paralympics Committee of India (PCI) President Devendra Jhajharia said para athletes from 107 countries have confirmed participation and this edition will be the biggest one in the history of the championships.
