(Express)The Enforcement Directorate (ED) arrested Trinamool Congress MLA Jiban Krishna Saha from his residence in Andi, Murshidabad, on Monday following an extensive raid lasting over five hours. The arrest is part of the probe into the alleged School Service Commission (SSC) recruitment scam, as part of which the agency has been conducting coordinated raids across West Bengal.Saha has been accused of refusing to cooperate with the investigating agency. During the raid, in a desperate attempt to evade the officers, he allegedly jumped over a wall and also threw his mobile phone into the bushes behind his house. The phone has since been recovered, officers said.In 2023, during another raid at Saha’s residence by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the Burwan MLA had reportedly flung two of his mobile phones into a pond.Officers said Saha’s relatives’ residences were also raided, including that of his in-laws in Raghunathganj, Murshidabad. In Birbhum, a search was conducted at the home of Maya Saha, a Trinamool councillor from Ward 9 in Sainthia municipality. Maya is reportedly Jiban Saha’s maternal aunt.“They came to my house, conducted the raid and happily left the place. I fully cooperated with them. They have asked me to appear before them on August 28,” Maya said later.Additionally, an ED team raided the residence of accused Prasanna Roy’s in-laws in Purulia. Roy, who is currently in jail, is alleged to have acted as a “middleman” in the recruitment process. The ED had previously seized several of his properties. There are allegations that three of Roy’s sisters-in-law secured primary school teacher jobs around the same time a few years ago. It remains unclear if the current raid is directly linked to these appointments.Story continues below this adSearches are also being conducted at the house of a bank employee in Andi Mahish village in Murshidabad, indicating the widening scope of the investigation.Sweety Kumari reports from West Bengal for The Indian Express.
