Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is now confirmed to have had his contract at Besiktas terminated early, with the former Liverpool midfielder returning to England.Oxlade-Chamberlain has spent the past two seasons in Turkey with Besiktas, having joined the Super Lig club upon the expiry of his contract at Liverpool in 2023.But ongoing injuries and a series of managerial changes has seen a lack of stability and starts for the midfielder while in Istanbul.Out of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s plans and among the club’s top earners, negotiations have now concluded with the early termination of Oxlade-Chamberlain’s contract.Besiktas confirmed in a statement on Wednesday that the 32-year-old had been released with a year left on his deal, with the club paying him a severance fee of €1.75 million (£1.5m).Oxlade-Chamberlain, who did not feature in any of Besiktas’ first six games of the season, is now free to sign for a new club and is expected to head back to the UK.The Athletic‘s Gregg Evans reported earlier this month that Birmingham City were among the clubs exploring a deal for the England international.Former club Southampton and Sheffield United have both been credited with an interest in the past and it appears as though Oxlade-Chamberlain is prepared to step down to the Championship.Speaking to Sky Sports months after his switch to Besiktas, he admitted it was a challenge living so far away from his fiancee Perrie and their son Axel.“I think as a young player, you’re just in the swing of things and you’re just happy to be there and carefree and you’re playing football and it’s all about yourself,” he explained.“I think the older you get, you have children, a family and that’s when those small little changes make a difference.“When you’ve been away for four days out the week, and you know, the little man’s at home. They’re still in England, so that’s a different sort of struggle where I don’t see them too much at all.“I’m FaceTiming home, he’s asking me why I’m still playing football, when am I coming back…so they’re the sort of mental moments where it becomes difficult.”Oxlade-Chamberlain made 50 appearances during his time at Besiktas, largely in midfield but also filling in on either wing and even at right-back, and he helped them lift the Turkish Cup in 2024.
