The West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences (WBNUJS) marked its silver jubilee celebrations on Thursday with the release of a Special Cover Cancellation with My Stamp at Town Hall, Kolkata. Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court, T S Sivagnanam, released the special cover as the Chief Guest.Founded by Professor N R Madhava Menon, NUJS has emerged as one of India’s premier national law universities. It has been accredited by NAAC A+ and is ranked 4th among law schools in India by NIRF 2025.The Silver Jubilee celebrations will continue throughout the year with various academic, cultural, and outreach programs.Speaking at the occasion, Chief Justice Sivagnanam highlighted the importance of law in modern life, stating that it has become an integral part of human existence. He praised the university’s 25-year journey, noting that it has been a milestone in the field of legal education.“West Bengal has Universities which are 100-200 year old, but 25 years for a law college is a milestone. I have had a host of interns in Calcutta High Court and 80 percent were from NUJS. At one point I had to request, I want students from government colleges and Calcutta university interns like from Hazra Law College,” he said.He also appreciated Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s continuous support to the institution.Chief Justice Sivagnanam emphasised that law students have a commitment to society, living beings, and the Constitution. He added that while “Artificial Intelligence can assist, it cannot replace humans.”Story continues below this adAccording to him law is the profession which does not require updating but learning as judges does not stop. “From civil judge to High Court we are being trained continuously. Learning law is not confined to the four walls of the classroom,” he said.The programme was attended by Minister-in-charge of Law, Judicial & Labour Department, Government of West Bengal; Justice Tapabrata Chakraborty, Justice Apurba Sinha Roy, Justice Soumen Sen and Ashok Kumar, Chief Postmaster General, West Bengal Circle.Justice Tapabrata Chakraborty noted that globalisation has brought significant changes in legal education, offering students diverse career options. Law Minister Moloy Ghatak assured continued government support, highlighting significant financial commitments to NUJS.
