RG Kar rape and murder case: Calcutta HC judge releases victim’s family’s appeal for further investigation

Written by Tanusree Bose Kolkata | August 29, 2025 05:41 AM IST 2 min readThe division bench is hearing the CBI's appeal seeking death penalty for the sole convict Sanjoy Roy and also the appeal by Roy seeking acquittal in the case.A SINGLE bench comprising Justice Tirthankar Ghosh of the Calcutta High Court on Thursday released the RG Kar rape and murder case from the bench.A writ petition filed by the victim’s family in December last year has sought further investigation, re-investigation or court-monitored investigation in the case, pointing out that they were not satisfied with the CBI probe.According to Justice Ghosh, since two matters related to the RG Kar rape and murder case are being heard in the Division Bench of Justices Debangshu Basak and Md Sabbar Rashidi and thus he is releasing this matter from the single bench as it should also be heard by the division bench.The division bench is hearing the CBI’s appeal seeking death penalty for the sole convict Sanjoy Roy and also the appeal by Roy seeking acquittal in the case.An on-duty doctor was raped and murdered inside the seminar room of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital here on August 9 last year. Sanjoy Roy was arrested by the Kolkata Police the next day. The Calcutta High Court later handed over the investigation to the CBI.The court observed, “Having considered the fact that an appeal has been preferred and is being heard by the division bench of this court, let this matter be tagged with the appeal of the division bench.
