Congress leader Bhupinder Singh Hooda Thursday accused the BJP government of failing to answer the Opposition’s questions in the recently concluded monsoon session of the Haryana Vidhan Sabha, a charge brushed aside by Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini who said the Opposition party had no issues to raise in the House.Addressing a press conference, Hooda claimed the government failed to provide clear answers on pressing issues including law and order, farmers’ welfare, education, health, corruption, rising crime, condition of roads, hospitals, inflation, corruption, unemployment, water logging and crop damage.“Neither the ministers nor the chief minister came prepared. The BJP government kept running away from the Opposition’s questions during the entire session and did not give a direct and clear answer,” Hooda said. The former chief minister also criticized the government’s handling of Minimum Support Price (MSP), fertilizers, and compensation for crop losses.“Farmers are being forced to sell crops like maize and sunflower well below MSP, and the portal-based system has become a tool for evasion rather than support,” he said, adding that “the Pradhan Mantri Crop Insurance Scheme has benefited insurance companies more than farmers, with compensation dropping by 90 per cent”.Highlighting alleged irregularities in the issuance and withdrawal of Below Poverty Line (BPL) cards, Hooda accused the BJP of electoral manipulation. “Lakhs of BPL cards were hastily issued before elections to garner votes, and now, over 11 lakh families have been removed from the list,” he alleged.Hooda also raised concerns over law and order, accusing the BJP of misleading the House with outdated crime statistics. He said, “Haryana is now witnessing an unprecedented rise in organized crime, with over 80 active gangs involved in extortion, kidnappings, and contract killings”. Citing data from the NCRB and Social Progress Index, Hooda said, “Haryana has become the most unsafe state in the country, especially for women”.Story continues below this adHooda also countered BJP claims on sportsperson employment, presenting data showing over 700 athletes were appointed under Congress rule — a policy, he claimed the BJP has now scrapped.Condemning recent hikes in collector rates and HUDA auction policies, he said the decisions make land unaffordable for the poor and middle class. “This exposes BJP’s anti-poor stance,” he remarked.Responding to Hooda’s claims, Saini said, “They had no issue to raise in House”.Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a Cabinet meeting chaired by him, Saini also said that Congress leaders carried posters on Beti Bachao Beti Padhao scheme, but they forgot that it was during the grand old party’s rule when Haryana was infamous for female foeticide.Story continues below this adCountering Hooda’s claims, Cabinet minister Anil Vij said, “If the Opposition had something to say in response to the data on law and order, they should have replied inside the House itself. The job of the Opposition is to raise its voice, but the government has answered them with facts and figures.”On Hooda’s allegations that the government did not provide correct figures in the Assembly, Vij said, “That is contempt of the House. If incorrect figures were presented, they should have pointed it out in the House itself. They have no right to make such statements outside. In the Assembly, everyone gets an opportunity to speak. But instead of debating, the Opposition ran away from the floor”.Stay updated with the latest - Click here to follow us on Instagram© The Indian Express Pvt Ltd
