Team GB’s Curling heroes have told talkSPORT that the sport’s cheating scandal has been blown a bit out of proportion.Bruce Mouat’s squad agonisingly missed out on a gold medal and were forced to settle for silver following a 9-6 defeat to Canada.Team GB suffered heartbreak in the men’s curling finalGettyThe all-Scottish team were aiming to become Team GB’s first men’s curling gold medal winners since the inaugural 1924 Games. However, on the penultimate day of the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics, Canada kept their cool to sweep for glory on Saturday. The victory left a sour taste in the mouths of curling fans, with the gold medal winners at the heart of a cheating row at the Games. The Canadians were accused of double-touching during their victory over Sweden, which led organisers to introduce a major rule change.Team GB curlers react to cheating scandalCurling Silver medallists Mouat and Hammy McMillan were asked whether the scandal took anything away from the final.“To be honest, no,” McMillan told talkSPORT. “The word cheating that’s getting thrown around, I’ll be honest, it’s a bit of a violation. “It’s like being offside in football. I think the reaction that kicked off on that second or third day of the men’s and women’s round robin, personally, I think it could have been handled a lot different at the time.“But it was a violation. It was offside. I think it was a mistake on their part where they could have handled it differently. “If you’re asking me personally, the Canadians, they could have handled that situation a lot differently, and it wouldn’t have escalated the way it did.“But that takes nothing away from us playing them in the final. It was a good game.”Canada curler Marc Kennedy was at the centre of a cheating row that took over the OlympicsAFPYet Team GB pair McMillan and Mouat said it was blown out of proportion a bitAFPMouat added: “I also kind of enjoyed the drama of it. There were so many TikToks”, to which McMillan agreed, saying ‘they’re mean, they’re brilliant’.Mouat continued: “They made it so much better. “There were so many people that fell in the figure skating, and then people would just edit Marc [Kennedy’s] finger, the skate. “So that was quite exciting to see that curling was getting such a platform, even on TikTok and social media, rather than just on television.”McMillan told talkSPORT: “What’s the old saying? Any publicity is good publicity. So curling has gone worldwide. “If it’s because of that, yeah, we’d like to think it’s actually because of the games and the results and the good performances and the amazing shots that we all do. But it doesn’t take away from this week.”Team GB claimed a silver medal for the third time in four GamesGettyThe pair have still helped Team GB achieve a record-equalling Winter Olympics with five medals secured – three golds, a silver and a bronze.“Wow, what a three weeks we’ve had,” Mouat said. “Just been incredible to actually experience what a true Olympics is like. “We’ve all had our family and friends here and now getting to celebrate with them last night and celebrate a medal rather than commiserating a loss in a final.“But yeah, it’s just been so special to have everyone here, and I’m really proud that we’re taking something home to hopefully inspire another generation of curlers.”
