Opposition leader Alex Borg declined to confirm whether the Nationalist Party has proposed Judge Lawrence “Wenzu” Mintoff as their nominee for Chief Justice.Speaking outside Parliament yesterday evening, Borg said: “I will remain consistent in what I’ve said, that I will not reveal any names because I want to respect the independence, the strength and the impartiality of the Judiciary,” Borg told Lovin Malta.He added that his focus remains on the national interest. “At the end of the day, I look at the National Interest,” he said View this post on Instagram A post shared by Lovin Malta (@lovinmalta)When asked whether the ball is now in the Opposition’s court, Borg noted that the Constitution gives them a decisive role. “Obviously, the ball is in our court since the Constitution gives us the right to decide on a Chief Justice through an agreement via the two-thirds majority rule,” he said.Judge Wenzu Mintoff, who has been mentioned in media reports as the Opposition’s proposed candidate, was a Labour MP from 1987 to 1992 and has strong ties with the party.The appointment of a Chief Justice requires a two-thirds parliamentary majority. With the Government having reportedly proposed Judge Miriam Hayman and the Opposition reportedly putting forward Mintoff, the process remains in a delicate deadlock.Earlier this month, PN blocked the appointment of Judge Consuelo Scerri Herrera as Chief Justice, whose nomination by the Government failed to achieve the required two-thirds majority.Borg emphasised that the Opposition is committed to ensuring that the final appointment respects the Judiciary’s impartiality while complying with constitutional procedures.What do you think of this?•
