Young footballers across Malta could soon be expressing themselves in more ways than just goals and assists, thanks to a new initiative blending sport with creativity.A collaboration between Arts Council Malta and the Malta Football Association will see €50,000 distributed every year to football nurseries through the newly launched Sport Arti programme. Ten nurseries will be selected annually, with each receiving €5,000 to develop creative projects for their players.Rather than focusing solely on performance on the pitch, the initiative encourages clubs to explore artistic expression as part of youth development. Suggested ideas include creating murals, redesigning club identities, composing original anthems, or other projects that allow children to engage with culture in a hands-on way.The initiative forms part of a wider strategy aligned with Malta’s Vision 2050 framework, which promotes stronger links between culture, education and sport while supporting youth development and wellbeing.Speaking at the launch in Ta’ Qali, organisers highlighted the importance of nurturing well-rounded young people by combining sport with creativity, collaboration and confidence-building.Minister for Culture Owen Bonnici said the scheme reflects a commitment to making creativity a meaningful part of everyday life and strengthening ties between sectors.Arts Council Malta Executive Chairman Luke Dalli emphasised the importance of holistic youth development, saying young athletes should also be given space to express themselves creatively and grow beyond the pitch.Malta Youth FA General Secretary Stephanie Rocco welcomed the initiative, noting it complements the association’s social goals by encouraging confidence, teamwork and creativity among young players.MFA Vice President Matthew Paris also highlighted the value of expanding opportunities for young people through collaborative initiatives between the cultural and sporting sectors. The three-year agreement aims to create sustainable opportunities for children and young people while strengthening collaboration between Malta’s arts and sports communities.•
