Gang robbing railway passengers on express trains at night busted

(File photo)Mumbai Government Railway Police (GRP) busted a gang that allegedly targeted those travelling longer distances in trains at night and found their involvement in 16 cases. The police seized gold, cash and valuables worth Rs 22 lakhs.The accused are primarily UP residents who would come to the city and travel in trains with the intention of looting people.As per official sources, between May 23 and 24, the gang targeted a person travelling on the Coimbatore – Rajkot express when one of the gang members cut open a pocket that was hidden in the person’s pant and fled with jewellery worth Rs 3,06 lakhs following which a complaint was registered at the Kalyan Railway Police Station.The railway crime branch observed that a similar modus operandi had been used in several cases where passengers on mail trains travelling at night were targeted. The police found that the accused would roam around in gangs in the train at night and decide on the target.“While one of them would cut his picket or pick up something from the bag, other accused would be around posing as passengers. In case, the victim would wake up and start shouting, the other accused would intervene, giving the accused space to flee from the spot. It would only be later that the passenger would realize all of them were from the same gang,” said Mangesh Khade, assistant police inspector.The officer said that on August 25, they received a tip off that the accused were coming to Kalyan following which a trap was laid and two persons identified as Waqar Khan, (39) and Jugal Vishwakarma, (41) both Uttar Pradesh residents, were taken into custody. Based on their interrogation, the police arrested four persons involved in their gang.During their questioning, the police found their alleged involvement in a total of 16 crimes registered in Kalyan, Karjat, Dombivali and Thane Railway Police Stations.
