So I left the country a couple days ago, spent a week in JHB and 2 in the Cape. And geez, it was awesome. I see why westerners love it here, it feels familiar but has a certain African twist to it. Granted my decision to prioritise Cpt was driven by media but I honestly wish I stayed a bit longer in JHB, this place just speaks to my soul. I felt more at home here than the cape(I'm from NYC). CPT is fabulous but I just couldn't ignore how segregated it was... I also noticed how politics played a role in customer service/interactions. Like for example I was in a restaurant and it took a while to get service, even folks who entered after we did were serviced faster. I felt like an outsider for the most part. Am I paranoid? Other than that, it was great! Also, the crime narrative by the media definitely seemed exaggerated while I was there, I felt totally safe. But then again my stay was brief so I wouldn't really know... As for Durban? I hear that's a hidden gem, I'll have to come back for that one. One love, SA. This place is awesome. submitted by /u/Bossman2270 [link] [comments]
