We recognise that,” Carney said.“The EV mandate adds to the liquidity issues they have, the financial challenges these producers have. They’ve got enough on their plate right now so we are taking that off.” The Canadian Vehicle Manufacturers’ Association and others have been lobbying the government to scrap the EV mandate.Carney also announced measures for workers and businesses in those sectors most impacted by the US tariffs and trade disruptions. The government is also making employment insurance more flexible and with extended benefits.“We can’t rely on our most important trading partner like we once did,” Carney said. Most imports from Canada and Mexico are still protected by the United States-Mexico-Canada trade pact, but Trump has some sector-specific tariffs that do apply for Canada despite the USMCA — known as 232 tariffs — which are having an impact on the Canadian economy and the auto sector in particular. There is the 50% tariff on steel and aluminum imports, for example. Most Read1Looks like we have lost India and Russia to deepest, darkest China: Trump2Shashi Tharoor’s ‘British Museum’ dig after Indian traveller’s bike gets stolen in UK3Trump suggests trade deals would end if US govt loses tariff case in Supreme Court4Nepal bans 2 dozen social media sites including Facebook, X and YouTube. China hit Canadian canola with a 75.8% tariff last month, a measure widely seen as a response to Canada’s 100% tariff on Chinese electric vehicles.AdvertisementAdvertisementYou May LikeSubscribeSign InJournalism of CourageTop CategoriesLATEST STORIESCanada’s Carney to delay EV mandate as country deals with Trump’s tariffsIf you pick someone like Sanju Samson, you can’t keep him in reserves: Sunil GavaskarA fetish, frozen legs and a 5 crore scam: how an NHS doctor fooled insurers with self-amputationEric Adams says he will remain in New York mayoral race amid reports of Trump offering him Saudi ambassador postDuleep Trophy semifinals roundup: Jagadeesan misses out on double ton as South pile on runs, Central reply strongly to WestPlaque with Ashoka emblem in Kashmir’s Hazratbal sparks vandalism, political protestsSavitribai Phule Pune University to conduct workshop on avoiding predatory journalsReviving schools to creating awareness on sustainable architecture: Meet the educators who were honoured by President475 people detained during immigration raid at Georgia Hyundai plant, says homeland security25,000 police personnel, AI surveillance to oversee Ganpati immersion in MumbaiSunil Gavaskar on Jasprit Bumrah ahead of India’s Asia Cup campaign: ‘There will be no workload problem for him’Mumbai to see wet Anant Chaturdashi as IMD issues orange alertDemocrats befriended Jeffrey Epstein when he was alive, did not care about victims, says Donald TrumpGoa court allows accused in Sonali Phogat murder case to travel to Bali for wife’s birthday‘Shared sensitive information for personal gains’: Court rejects bail plea of former fund manager of Axis Mutual FundShut since last month amid heavy rain, Jammu schools to reopen on September 10
