The earthquake occurred at a moderately shallow depth of 50. km beneath the epicenter in the evening on Friday, September 5th, 2025, at 9:00 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from Japan's National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.6. A third agency, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, reported the same quake at magnitude 4.3.Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Bando (pop. 57,100) located 4 km from the epicenter, Iwai (pop. 42,500) 6 km away, Joso (pop. 60,800) 9 km away, Koga (pop. 139,300) 19 km away, Tsukuba (pop. 241,700) 20 km away, Tsukuba (pop. 175,600) 21 km away, Chikusei (pop. 100,800) 25 km away, Tokyo (pop. 8,336,600) 49 km away, Mito (pop. 270,700) 57 km away, and Yokohama (pop. 3,761,600) 78 km away.VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.Update Fri, 5 Sep 2025, 12:04Seismic-like event, possible earthquake, reported few minutes ago near Kofu, Yamanashi, JapanUnconfirmed earthquake or seismic-like event: 1.3 km southeast of Kofu, Yamanashi, Japan, 2 minutes agoWe are receiving unverified early reports of ground shaking possibly caused by seismic activity in or near Kofu, Yamanashi, Japan on 5 Sep 2025 (GMT) at approximately 12:02 GMT.There are no details yet on the magnitude or depth of this possible quake. It is commonly measured on the so-called Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale (MMI) ranging from 1 (not felt) to 10 (extreme shaking), and given in Roman numerals as I,II,...IX, X, and often displayed with color codes ranging from light blue to dark red.Earthquake intensity depends mainly on the magnitude and depth of the quake as well as the distance from the epicenter: The further away, the less shaking intensity occurs.Read more about the MMI scale!Number of reports by intensityShaking intensityNumber of reportsMin-Max distance from epicenter (*)Average distance (*)II: Very weak shaking1824–148 km (14.8–92 mi)60 km (37 mi)III: Weak shaking938–88 km (23–55 mi)54 km (33 mi)IV: Light shaking718.7–71 km (11.6–44 mi)38 km (24 mi)Notes(*) Reports are filtered to exclude those that are likely highly inaccurate or esaggerated.Only reports with latitude/longitude coordinate positions given (34 in total) could be used for geographic statistics.I didn't feel itI felt this quakeIf you were near the epicenter and felt it, please share your experience and submit a short "I felt it" report! The length of the rupture zone thus was probably around 2 km (2 mi).[More info]Recorded aftershocks, latest first (0 quake)Sep 5, 2025 09:00 pm (GMT +9)12 minutes ago - felt4.350 km0 km - This quakeIbaraki, 49 km N of Tokyo, Tokyo, JapanMain Shock (this quake)MoreMap of aftershocksEarthquake statisticsAverage number of earthquakesBased on data from the past 25 years and our earthquake archive back to 1900, there are about 3,600 quakes on average per year in the area near the epicenter of this quake (within 100 km/61 mi):Mag. 6 or higher: 0.24 quakes per year (or 1 quake every 4.2 years)Mag. 5 or higher: 5.6 quakes per yearMag. 4 or higher: 54 quakes per year (or 4.5 quakes per month)Mag. 3 or higher: 171 quakes per year (or 14.3 quakes per month)Mag. 2 or higher: 499 quakes per year (or 42 quakes per month)Mag. 1 or higher: 1,600 quakes per year (or 4.4 quakes per day)The area where this quake occurred has a very high level of seismic activity.
