(Credit: Unsplash)The Department of Library and Information Science at Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) has organised a workshop titled ‘Understanding Journals: Credibility, Selection and Avoiding Predatory Traps’ on September 29 and 30. To be conducted online via Zoom, the workshop is open for UG/PG Students, Research Scholars, Faculty Members and costs a Rs 500 registration fee.In 2018, an Indian Express investigation had revealed how Hyderabad had become a hub of predatory journals. In the same year, the University Grants Commission (UGC) formed a CARE (Consortium for Academic and Research Ethics) journal list to enumerate high-quality journals. However, this list was discontinued in 2024 and the UGC said that it was following a decentralised approach giving universities freedom to make their own lists. The brochure gives details about the workshop – “In the evolving landscape of academia, the credibility and quality of journals are vital to maintaining the integrity of scholarly communication. However, the increasing pressure to publish has led many students and early-career researchers to unknowingly fall into the trap of predatory journals—publications that prioritise profit over peer review, thereby compromising academic standards and reputations. A common concern among new researchers is how to identify and select a trustworthy, credible journal for their work. This two-day online workshop aims to equip students, early-career researchers, and faculty members with essential knowledge and practical tools to identify credible journals, understand indexing and impact factors, navigate the journal selection process, and recognise the deceptive practices of predatory publishers. Through expert talks and interactive sessions, participants will develop a critical lens to make informed publishing decisions and uphold research integrity.”Key topics covered under the workshop are ISSN, peer review, editorial board, indexing databases, what makes a journal credible?, red flags of predatory journals, tools and checklists to verify journals, ethical publishing practices, and a Q and A with discussion. An E-Certificate will be provided to all participants.Click here to join Express Pune WhatsApp channel and get a curated list of our stories© The Indian Express Pvt LtdTags:pune
