Djed Spence is in line to make history for England this week, and the Tottenham man hopes he can be a role model for others to follow.Spurs fans will feel that Spence’s England call-up was a long time coming, with the 25-year-old arguably having been one of the best full-backs in the Premier League since breaking into Ange Postecoglou’s side last season. With James Maddison and Dominic Solanke currently out injured, the defender is the only Tottenham representative in the England squad.Thomas Tuchel has said that Spence is fully deserving of his call-up and admitted that he sees him as an option for both right-back and left-back.Credit: @reclusemedia / InstagramDjed Spence is honoured to become England’s first openly Muslim playerThe 25-year-old is on the cusp of making history and will become the first Muslim player to play for the Three Lions if he plays against either Andorra or Serbia. The Tottenham Hotspur man said that he is honoured to have that distinction, admitting that his faith is an important part of his life. When asked about becoming the first muslim player to wear the England shirt, Spence told Sky Sports: “I’ve seen that. It’s a blessing, it’s amazing. I did see something like that. I was surprised, really, first ever. It’s just amazing. I don’t have the words really.”Asked if he felt pressure being the first of his faith to play for the senior side, the full-back responded: “Maybe, maybe not. I don’t really feel the pressure for certain things. I just play football with a smile on my face, be happy, and the rest will take care of itself.“First things first, God is the greatest. I pray a lot. I give gratitude to God. In the toughest moments of my life, the darkest moments, I’ve always believed that God has always been by my side.“When I’m winning, when I’m in a good moment, I promote God as well because he’s always been by my side. It’s a big thing for me, my faith. If I can do it, you can do it. Not just Muslim kids, any child of any faith. Put your mind to something and you can do it, man.”Spence admits his strong mentality has helped him overcome challengesSpence’s path to the Tottenham starting eleven and to the England set-up has been far from straightforward, with the full-back having his fair share of doubters. However, rather than giving up on his dream, the former Middlesbrough man has fought to overcome every hurdle that was put in front of him, and he puts that down to his mentality.Spence added: “Without [a strong] mentality, you won’t make it to the top. I definitely think I have got a strong mentality, especially to fight through challenges.”READ MORE: Tottenham’s Pedro Porro tops worrying Premier League stat after three gamesThe post Djed Spence could be about to make England history with ‘first-ever’ moment on the cards appeared first on Spurs Web.
