(Unconfirmed) Moderate magnitude 4.7 earthquake at 2 km depth4 Sep 13:31 UTC: First to report: VolcanoDiscovery after 3 minutes.4 Sep 13:33: Now using data updates from RaspberryShakeUpdate Thu, 4 Sep 2025, 13:39Moderate magnitude 4.7 earthquake 7 km southeast of San Jose de Ocoa, Dominican RepublicA very shallow magnitude 4.7 earthquake was reported in the morning near San Jose de Ocoa, San José de Ocoa, Provincia de San Jose de Ocoa, Dominican Republic.According to the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, the quake hit on Thursday, September 4th, 2025, at 9:28 am local time at a very shallow depth of 2.10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage.Moderate shaking probably occurred in San Jose de Ocoa (pop. 21,100) located 7 km from the epicenter.Weak shaking might have been felt in Azua (pop. 59,100) located 27 km from the epicenter, Bani (pop. 66,700) 28 km away, Villa Altagracia (pop. 40,000) 38 km away, Bajos de Haina (pop. 66,800) 48 km away, Santo Domingo Oeste (pop. 701,300) 51 km away, Santo Domingo (pop. 2,201,900) 62 km away, and Concepcion de La Vega (pop. 102,400) 82 km away.Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include San Francisco de Macoris (pop. 124,800) located 93 km from the epicenter, and Santiago de los Caballeros (pop. 1,200,000) 109 km away.VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. It is commonly measured on the so-called Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale (MMI) ranging from 1 (not felt) to 10 (extreme shaking), and given in Roman numerals as I,II,...IX, X, and often displayed with color codes ranging from light blue to dark red.Earthquake intensity depends mainly on the magnitude and depth of the quake as well as the distance from the epicenter: The further away, the less shaking intensity occurs.Read more about the MMI scale!Number of reports by intensityShaking intensityNumber of reportsMin-Max distance from epicenter (*)Average distance (*)I: Not felt1135–135 km (84–84 mi)135 km (84 mi)II: Very weak shaking1015.9–72 km (9.9–45 mi)51 km (31 mi)III: Weak shaking1217.4–62 km (10.8–38 mi)48 km (30 mi)IV: Light shaking928–67 km (17.4–42 mi)54 km (34 mi)Notes(*) Reports are filtered to exclude those that are likely highly inaccurate or esaggerated.Only reports with latitude/longitude coordinate positions given (33 in total) could be used for geographic statistics.I didn't feel itI felt this quakeIf you were near the epicenter and felt it, please share your experience and submit a short "I felt it" report! The length of the rupture zone thus was probably around 4 km (2 mi).[More info]Recorded aftershocks, latest first (0 quake)Sep 4, 2025 09:28 am (GMT -4)12 minutes ago - felt4.72.1 km0 km - This quake6.9 km SE of San Jose de Ocoa, Provincia de San Jose de Ocoa, Dominican RepublicMain Shock (this quake)MoreMap of aftershocksEarthquake statisticsAverage number of earthquakesBased on data from the past 55 years and our earthquake archive back to 1900, there are about 219 quakes on average per year in the area near the epicenter of this quake (within 100 km/61 mi):Mag. 6 or higher: 0.02 quakes per year (or 1 quake every 62.5 years)Mag. 5 or higher: 0.24 quakes per year (or 1 quake every 4.2 years)Mag. 4 or higher: 3.3 quakes per yearMag. 3 or higher: 105 quakes per year (or 8.8 quakes per month)Mag. 2 or higher: 215 quakes per year (or 17.9 quakes per month)Mag. 1 or higher: 218 quakes per year (or 18.2 quakes per month)The area where this quake occurred has a high level of seismic activity.
