NBA writer suggest Timberwolves pursue blockbuster trade for $228 Million point guard

The Minnesota Timberwolves are still reeling from losing in the Western Conference Finals to the NBA champion Oklahoma City Thunder. With the franchise looking for possible answers to get over the hump, the franchise could look to make a move.Veteran guard Mike Conley has provided stability on their roster; however, the former all-star is closer to retirement. Minnesota could soon need a long-term solution in the backcourt. The Athletic's Jon Krawczynski suggested that the Timberwolves could make a significant splash by pulling off a trade for the San Antonio Spurs' point guard, De'Aaron Fox. "What I do know is that if the point guard is not solidified and the rest of the team looks primed for another deep playoff run, Connelly will not hesitate to pull the trigger on a big trade. That is the way he's built these Wolves, and it won't stop now," Krawczynski said."Maybe the Spurs would part with De'Aaron Fox if things aren't going well there, though the money would give me pause. Maybe one of the Jones brothers could be had in Chicago or Orlando."The Spurs are entering a new era with new head coach Mitch Johnson, along with a full season featuring De'Aaron Fox and Victor Wembanyama. They traded for Fox in a blockbuster multi-team deal that sent Zach LaVine to the Kings.Fox re-signed a four-year, $229 million contract extension this offseason, solidifying his future with the Spurs; however, their recent draft selection could signal a shift in direction. The Spurs have drafted a Rutgers guard, Dylan Harper, with the No.2 overall pick in the 2025 NBA draft, along with the selection of Rook ie of the Year Stephon Castle. With two young high-upside guards, this could leave Fox's long-term future in San Antonio up in the air. A pairing of Fox and Edwards would undoubtedly lift the Timberwolves into title contention. Fox has proven to be one of the better scoring point guards in the league last season, averaging 23.5 points,6.3 assists, and 1.0 steals, adding him to a backcourt that already includes Anthony Edwards, which could form one of the better tandems in the league. Fox is currently rehabbing from an injury to the Pinky. It remains to be seen if the Spurs will put their star point guard on the trading block. However, several teams would likely be lining up to acquire his services.
