The protest escalated into a confrontation with security personnel, prompting police to fire tear gas shells to disperse the crowd.The girl had been residing in the relief camp after ethnic tension broke out on May 3, 2023.Officials said the minor had been missing since Sunday. After she failed to return home till late in the night, the family lodged a formal missing person complaint after which teams from Imphal East and Imphal West launched a coordinated search operation.Police examined CCTV footage from nearby areas, which led to the identification of a suspect and his detention for questioning.Police said that during interrogation, the accused confessed to have killed the girl. He led police to the spot where the body of the girl was recovered in a sack under a bridge. The body has been kept at the mortuary of a hospital for post-mortem examination.A city judge remanded the accused to police custody for further investigation.
