Kikuube district is mourning the death of their LC V chairperson, Peter Banura, who was killed in a fatal road accident on Saturday along the Hoima–Fort Portal road. Banura, son of Maj Gen Matayo Kyaligonza, Uganda’s Ambassador to Burundi, was first elected LC V chairperson in 2021. He was re-elected in the recent local government elections, polling 37,455 votes and defeating Phenekansi Timanyire of the National Unity Platform (NUP), who garnered 6,230 votes. His death comes barely three years after another fatal crash that claimed Kadir Kirungi, the former Hoima LC V chairperson, in March 2023 along the Hoima–Kampala highway. How the accident occurred According to preliminary police reports, Banura had parked his official Toyota Hilux (UG 3400 084) by the roadside and was speaking to a group of people when a speeding Toyota Hiace taxi (UBQ 853E), travelling from Fort Portal towards Hoima, rammed into them at about 8:20 pm. Banura sustained critical injuries and was rushed to Hoima regional referral hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Police attributed the crash to over-speeding and reckless driving by the taxi driver, who fled the scene. Albertine Region police spokesperson Julius Hakiza said the vehicle involved has been impounded, while efforts are underway to identify and arrest the driver to assist with investigations. Banura’s body was later transferred to Mengo hospital for post-mortem examination. The post Kikuube LC V chairperson Banura killed in road crash appeared first on The Observer.
