Insurance industry leaders lead the 2026 Insurance Week sensitization match through Kampala. The insurance industry has completed the development of the Motor Third Party Insurance Digital Sticker, following the end of a piloting scheme that commenced July last year with selected vehicles. The Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA) together with the Uganda Insurers Association (UIA) have now commenced the rollout of the new system, urging the public especially motorists to embrace the complete shift from paper stickers. The stickers have been rolled out at this year’s Insurance Week, now ongoing at the Constitutional Square in Kampala and at regional centres countrywide. It is being used for the public sensitization campaign by IRA.Elias Edu, Corporation Secretary at National Insurance Corporation (NIC) says the digital insurance sticker is not only aimed at reducing the tedious paper system that involved going to agencies to look for the sticker, but will go a long way in eliminating fraud as premiums also grow.IRA CEO Al-Hajj Kaddunabbi Ibrahim Lubega, says the digital sticker is a result of the industry’s continued efforts at innovation, that includes simplifying products and accessing the services by the people as possible.“We are committed to making insurance services more accessible and convenient for Ugandans, he says. “We encourage insurers to move away from paper-based operations and fully embrace digital platforms.”He says the digital sticker has so far been well received by the motoring public, as it enables instant checks by traffic police, speeds up compliance, and boosts overall insurance access.Kaddunabbi says they will continue innovating to ensure more of the public embrace gets insurance. How It Works The motorist goes through the usual online or mobile phone-based purchase process, where for example MTN users dial *165#, go to Payments, then Fees & Taxes and finally Motor 3rd Party. After that the insurer enters the vehicle registration and the system shows the vehicle Third Party Insurance status like premium amount, and asks for the mobile money PIN.After successful payment, you instantly get an SMS with a unique reference number (often a 12-digit code or sticker reference). This confirms your payment into a central digital database managed by IRA, in partnership with URA and others relevant agencies. The payer then uses the reference number to generate and download the digital proof of insurance through a website of an insurance company of choice, enter the reference number, vehicle plate, phone number, and where necessary, email. The system issues a digital certificate; typically, a downloadable file, PDF, or image with a QR code (or similar scannable element) tied to the vehicle’s registration details. Some insurers email it directly or let you access it via their app or platform. No physical printing or sticking on the windscreen is required anymore in the fully digital phase. For traffic police checks, a mobile phone app is used to scan the QR code (if you show it on your phone) or simply query the central database by entering your registration number. This checks in real-time if the policy is valid, active, from a licensed insurer, and covers the vehicle, detecting fakes instantly.Apart from insurance companies showcasing their products, others events include medical camp, blood transfusion, and services by NIRA, Uganda Driver Licensing System, Federation of Small &Medium Enterprises and Uganda Police.-URNThe post Insurance Industry Rolls Out Motor Third Party Digital Sticker appeared first on Business Focus.
