Netanyahu pressing Mossad over Iranian uprising: Report

Wait 5 sec.

Fear of violent repression is keeping many Iranians off the streets, a former Trump administration official said.By World Israel News StaffPrime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has reportedly made his frustration with the Mossad intelligence agency clear, as its activities in Iran have failed to produce a mass civilian uprising that could topple the current Islamic regime, according to The New York Times. While both President Donald Trump and Netanyahu have avoided explicitly stating that regime change is a goal of the war, the Israeli premier has long issued statements directly addressing the Iranian people, expressing support for efforts to oust the Ayatollah-led government.According to the Times, Netanyahu was led to believe by Mossad that a large-scale uprising was an achievable outcome during Operation Roaring Lion.“Behind the scenes, Netanyahu ‘has expressed frustration that Mossad’s promises to foment revolt in Iran have not materialized,’” the report said.It added that just days after the outbreak of the war, Netanyahu again voiced his dissatisfaction to Mossad officials during a meeting.Netanyahu was said to have emphasized that Trump could end the war at any time, and that Mossad’s operations aimed at instigating an uprising in the Islamic Republic “had yet to bear fruit.”The regime’s brutal suppression of public protests earlier this year — triggered by dire economic distress faced by citizens — is still fresh in the minds of many Iranians.“A lot of protesters are not coming into the street because they’ll get shot,” Nate Swanson, a former State Department and White House official, told the Times.“They’re going to get slaughtered. That’s one thing. But the second thing is that there’s a good chunk of people who just want a better life, and they’re just sidelined right now. They don’t like the regime, but they don’t want to die opposing it. That 60 percent is going to stay home.”President Trump, who promised in January that “help was on the way” to protesters in Iran, has urged demonstrators to take to the streets. At the same time, he has advised them to wait until the U.S.-Israel bombing campaign has concluded. The post Netanyahu pressing Mossad over Iranian uprising: Report appeared first on World Israel News.
