Andy Reid to take leaf out of Sean Payton’s unconventional playbook for Taysom Hill 2.0

Wait 5 sec.

The Kansas City Chiefs may have just landed their very own, and a much younger, version of one of the NFL’s most unique weapons.Quarterback, tight end, runner, receiver and all round offensive Swiss army knife, Taysom Hill. Fields joined the Chiefs in a surprise trade ahead of the 2026 seasonGettyThe Chiefs surpristraded for quarterback Justin Fields from the New York Jets at the start of the new NFL year to back up franchise superstar Patrick Mahomes.Having been quite the journeyman over the past few years, the 27-year-old is now on his fourth team in as many seasons.Fields could be integrated into the Chiefs in a slightly different way than he has been since he entered the NFL as the 11th overall pick back in the 2021 NFL Draft.Should Mahomes fail to have fully recovered from his ACL and LCL injury in time, Fields could earn the starting job for the start of the 2026 campaign. However there is the possibility that head coach Andy Reid – one of the game brightest and most innovative offensive minds – could explore the possibility of utilizing his new QB in a similar way that the New Orleans Saints did with Hill.Under Reid’s close friend, and then Saints head coach Sean Payton, the BYU legend acted as a position-less red zone dynamo, where he played both special teams and lined up in formation as a receiver. This created both personnel mismatches and even confused opposing defenses. A powerful runner who recorded a 4.44 40-yard dash speed, Payton would sometimes deploy Hill – who he called the ‘Joker’ – under center in place of Pro Football Hall of Fame gunslinger Drew Brees. This opened up avenues for both the quarterback to rush down the field, but also his running threat also helped create open lanes for five-time Pro Bowl running back Alvin Kamara to burst through.During his time under Payton, Hill amassed 2,025 passing yards and eight touchdowns, 1,183 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns, while he tacked on an additional 388 yards and seven scores receiving, showcasing himself as a true triple-threat in the league.Hill has been a triple-threat in New Orleans, able to pass, rush and catch the footballGettyAs of 2026, and with nine seasons of experience, the 35-year-old is still the only player in the Super Bowl era with over 1,000 yards passing, rushing and receiving, with 12 passing touchdowns, 34 rushing scores, and 11 receiving touchdowns in his career. Reid could take leaf out of Payton’s playbookHaving seen the success that Payton had in the way that he chose to utilize Hill, some have called for Reid to look to adopt a similar blueprint for Fields when Mahomes inevitably comes back into the fray. The former Georgia and Ohio State Buckeyes quarterback ran a 4.46-second 40-yard dash during his Ohio State Pro Day in 2021, and has cemented a reputation in the NFL for being an explosive – and elite – runner of the football. In his five seasons in the NFL, Fields has rushed for 2,892 yards and 23 touchdowns. His 2022 campaign with the Chicago Bears a particular standout after he erupted for 1,143 rushing yards and eight scores, as well as passing for 2,242 yards and 17 touchdowns to 11 interceptions. He became just one of three QBs in NFL history to rush for over 1,000 yards in a season, joining that of Michael Vick (2006) and Baltimore Ravens franchise star Lamar Jackson (2019, 2020). Reid (L) could look to adopt a similar approach for Fields, like his good friend Payton (R) did when coaching Hill at the SaintsGettyHaving already showcased his ability to run the football, Reid could turn to his new QB to help aid the Chiefs’ rushing game after a disastrous 2025 season. Kansas City ranked 25th in the NFL in rushing yards per game (106.6 YPG), with Kareem Hunt leading the team with 611 yards and eight touchdowns. The Chiefs have already sought to address this issue by signing Super Bowl LX MVP Kenneth Walker III to a three-year, $43 million deal in free agency. Isiah Pacheco – now a member of the Detroit Lions – ranked second on the team with 462 yards and one score, while Mahomes himself clocked in at third with 422 yards for five scores,The Chiefs have sought to address their issues with rushing the ball by adding Walker III to the teamGettyWould Fields be willing to accept a different role in KC?With Mahomes entering the 2026 campaign coming off the first major injury of his career, it is unlikely that Reid would put his franchise star in a position where he has to use his legs and scramble often.Fields not only gives them an alternative but offers a hint on their plans to bounce back from a season that saw them miss out on the playoffs for the first time in Mahomes career.Whether Fields would be willing to adopt a role in Kansas City that is similar to that of Hill in New Orleans in what remains left of his career, though, remains to be seen. Some fans have predicted that he wouldn’t be up for it. “I’m guessing that no starting QB, past or present, would accept Taysom’s role,” one fan wrote on Reddit. “The ones who are 2nd string probably believe they will develop the skills to resume a starter’s job, which is less hits and higher pay than a running back or tight end. And I bet most QB’s aren’t tough enough either.Fields may need to accept a new role in KC once Mahomes returns back to the starting lineupGetty“Taysom was a college QB but was poorly regarded afterwards, going undrafted. He decided to play whatever position teams wanted him to play rather than hold out for a QB job.”“There also aren’t many guys that can pull it off. I mean I’ve never seen Justin Fields run with the power and violence Taysom did,” another fan commented. “And then how many of those guys still could pick up tackling fundamentals to be a special teams contributor. And then how many guys could learn the playbook well enough to know their differing responsibilities in all these roles. “How many could pick up the necessary blocking, catching and route running skills? I just don’t think it’s possible for someone to become what he became.”Stay up to date with the latest from the NFL across all platforms – follow our dedicated talkSPORT USA Facebook page and subscribe to our talkSPORT USA YouTube channel for all the news, exclusives, interviews and more.
