ADPD And Momentum To Join Forces Ahead Of The Next Election

Political parties ADPD and Momentum, have agreed to collaborate in a pre-electoral alliance ahead of the next general election. The decision was confirmed by ADPD chairperson Sandra Gauci, although both parties still need to finalise the details of their agreement according to Times of Malta.ADPD, formed in 2020 through the merger of Alternattiva Demokratika and Partit Demokratiku, focuses on environmental sustainability, social justice, and green policies.Momentum, launched in early 2025, positions itself as a centrist party open to working with others that share similar values.Momentum’s general secretary, Mark Camilleri Gambin, did not comment directly on the agreement but had previously indicated that his party was seeking cooperation with other third parties, particularly ADPD.He noted that both parties have recorded similar levels of support- around a few percentage points- suggesting that closer collaboration could help strengthen their impact and promote political change in Malta. While electoral alliances are not unheard of in Malta, they remain relatively uncommon.A notable example occurred in 2017, when the Nationalist Party partnered with the now-defunct Democratic Party under the Alleanza Nazzjonali banner. Although that coalition did not prevent a Labour Party victory, it did enable two Democratic Party candidates to enter parliament.Unlike that earlier arrangement, which involved a major party, this new alliance is between two smaller parties that typically poll below five percent nationally. What do you make of this?•
