Back to the Future (1985) is among the most iconic ’80s movies alongside the likes of Ghostbusters (1984), The Terminator (1984), and Aliens (1986). But what sets the sci-fi comedy adventure apart from other films of its kind is how it has remained a true pop-culture juggernaut without producing numerous sequels or reboots over the decades.Back to the Future remains one of the few ’80s properties — and franchises in general — that hit the brakes on more movies. Director/writer Robert Zemeckis and writer/producer Bob Gale have frequently opposed the idea of another film, be that a sequel or a reboot. But that hasn’t stopped the franchise from staying at 88 miles per hour since it arrived in theaters.Credit: Universal PicturesHow Back to the Future Has Grown Since 1985The beloved 1985 classic gave us two sequels — Back to the Future Part II (1989) and Back to the Future Part III (1990) — an early ’90s animated series, a long-running comic book series under IDW Publishing, video games, theme park attractions, and even a stage musical.Back to the Future: The Musical first arrived onstage in Manchester, U.K. in 2020, before truly making a name for itself on London’s West End the following year. With music and lyrics by Alan Silvestri and Glen Ballard and a book by Bob Gale, it is a musical stage adaptation of the beloved film with original music alongside songs from the 1985 classic.Credit: Back to the Future – The MusicalIt received positive reviews from audiences and critics and has picked up several awards.
