Christian Pulisic on World Cup pressure: “It’s nothing I can’t handle”

Being the face of a national team can certainly lead to added pressure for a star player but Christian Pulisic isn’t worried by it at all. Pulisic is in his latest U.S. men’s national team camp as the Americans prepare for a pair of showdowns against Top-10 opponents Belgium and Portugal. The AC Milan attacker leads the way in Mauricio Pochettino’s squad as the days count down until the 2026 FIFA World Cup kicks off in North America. While the USMNT only have four matches left until Pochettino names his tournament roster, Pulisic is confident in the squad’s ability to make a statement on home soil against the world’s best.“I mean, you guys [in the media] want me to feel the pressure, that’s for sure. There’s pressure. It’s a World Cup,” Pulisic said Friday at a press conference. “It’s not because of my position in the team or anything. I’m used to this. I wouldn’t want to be in any other position. I’m so lucky, I feel privileged to be in this position. There’s pressure. I feel it.“Yes. It’s there, but it’s nothing that I can’t handle,” he added. “I’m going to attack it head on. We are as a team. I don’t need to do it by myself. That’s the beauty of it. I have guys like [Weston McKennie], I have my whole team behind me, the staff, a country of fans, and I’m just going to do the best I can. That’s all I can do.”The 27-year-old Pulisic has remained the face of the USMNT as he continues through the prime of his club and international career. After playing in several major competitions with Borussia Dortmund, Chelsea, and AC Milan, the Pennsylvania native has become accustomed to the bright lights and responsibilities that come with it. Even with World Cup experience already under Pulisic’s belt after his 2022 involvement in Qatar, it’s hard to take the USMNT veteran off of his game. “I’d say like at this point in my career, it’s not much of a struggle for me,” Pulisic said. “I’ve gotten pretty used to it. I’ve just deleted most social media off my phone. It’s pretty easy. I just try to avoid it. And then there’s always going to be pressures.“I feel like people.. Yeah, you guys might think there’s more pressure than there is because you see it and read it and that’s what you guys do,” he added. “But really, I’m just kind of oblivious to it.”Pulisic has continued to take steps forward in his club career, rising to the occasion every step of the way. From winning a UEFA Champions League title to also lifting trophies in Germany and Italy, Pulisic has been able to achieve more than most American players have on the field. The pressure that Pulisic puts on himself is something that helps him prepare for what he hears off the field, a testament to his self-preparation for always improving. “I put a lot of pressure on myself,” Pulisic said. “We put a lot of pressure on ourselves and the way we want to perform, how much work we put in, we expect a lot of ourselves. And we try to focus on those things, what really matters, the people that affect us directly. And that’s all we can really do.”
