Ricky Evans knows he needs a breather, but that’s unlikely to happen any time soon. For those at the top end of darts, the sport can be relatively lucrative.Evans is a much-loved figure at the oche, but it doesn’t always translate to resultsGettyIt’s a sentiment that rings especially true for Luke Littler, who became the first player to scoop the £1million prize for winning the World Darts Championship. But for those not in the top rungs of the rankings, darts is not exactly the most prosperous of sports. It’s why players must travel all across England and Europe to compete in as many tournaments as possible to make ends meet.Evans, ranked 45th in the world, is all too familiar with that situation as he claimed the constant travelling has left him ‘knackered’.On the road again“I’m playing a lot more darts than most people do,” Evans told Tungsten Tales.“But, I’m knackered. I’m not knackered in the sense I’m tired, but I’m always in the suitcase.“I’m not one of the big top 12 in the world… I’m nowhere. “My mum and dad must think I’m a refugee or something. They must think, ‘Who are you’, because I’m never at home.“The Littler’s, the (Luke) Humphries’, the Gezzy’s (Gerwyn Price), I can’t imagine what they’re like because they have their own houses as well. “It’s a hard game when you’re travelling.”Even Price has commented on the mental toll of being on tourGettyEven Price, who is a constant presence in the world’s top 10, admitted the relentless nature of the tour is mentally draining. Luckily for those at the top, their earnings mean they have more chances than most to skip tournaments for a much-needed mental and physical rest. But for the likes of Evans, that’s simply not possible. It’s why the cult hero has ‘never missed one event’ in over a decade. Why ‘Rapid’ Ricky has to be an ever-present“If I was in their situation, I would pull out,” Evans said.“But I can’t. I need to get to Ally Pally, I’m in with a chance of getting a late run for the Grand Prix. I need to play events.Evans is constantly on the road for his dartsShutterstock“I’ve never missed one event in the 13 years I’ve been a Tour Card holder. “That just shows how rubbish I am because I’ve never won one.“I believe if I miss an event, that could have been a day I won one. That’s my stupid head for you. “But I love darts, that’s the reason I’m here.”
