ShareLyon will have to overturn a first-leg deficit if they are to reach the Women's Champions League semi-finals after losing to Wolfsburg.Lineth Beerensteyn scored the only goal as Wolfsburg earned a 1-0 win against Lyon in the first leg of their Women's Champions League quarter-final tie on Tuesday. Lyon pushed for a late equaliser but were wasteful in the final third, leaving them needing to overturn a one-goal deficit in next week's second leg at Groupama Stadium. The deadlock was broken in the 14th minute when Beerensteyn's shot from the edge of the box took a deflection off Damaris Egurrola, which wrong-footed Christiane Endler. Ella Peddemors then tested Endler once more as Wolfsburg ended the first half in the ascendancy, but Lyon emerged out of the interval with the bit between their teeth. They came within inches of restoring parity just before the hour through Kadidiatou Diani, but her right-footed effort from inside the area bounced back off the left-hand post. Korbin Shrader's bouncing shot was then comfortably gathered by Wolfsburg goalkeeper Stina Johannes, but Marie-Antoinette Katoto squandered a huge chance late on. After being found by Selma Bacha's corner, Katoto could only head over from inside the six-yard box as Wolfsburg held on for the three additional minutes in stoppage time.Data Debrief: Gritty Wolfsburg end Lyon's unbeaten away runComing into this game, Lyon had won each of their last seven Champions League games against Wolfsburg, a run that started with victory in the 2017-18 final, but they were far from their best here as they slipped to their first knockout defeat against their German opponents in the 2012-13 showpiece match. Wolfsburg's triumph also ended Lyon's 18-match unbeaten run in away matches in the competition, inflicting the eight-time champions' first defeat on the road in the Champions League since a 2-1 loss at Juventus in March 2022. But Jonatan Giraldez's side only have themselves to blame. They finished with an expected goals (xG) total of 1.91 from their 19 attempts, only three of which were on target, compared to Wolfsburg's 0.88 from their seven shots.
