Roberto De Zerbi’s imminent arrival as Tottenham Hotspur manager has already split opinions amongst supporters. The Italian is set to be confirmed as Igor Tudor’s successor on a five-year deal with the immediate mission to stop Spurs from suffering a first relegation in 49 years. De Zerbi’s imminent arrival as Spurs manager is set to split opinion amongst fansGettyHowever, De Zerbi‘s arrival could prove to be divisive amongst the fan base of the north London club. The Women of the Lane fan group have already urged the club not to appoint De Zerbi due to his comments on Mason Greenwood whilst Marseille manager.De Zerbi previously spent just under two years as Brighton manager, during which time he achieved their highest-ever league finish. His subsequent spell at Marseille ended in February after he was sacked by the French giants.Ahead of De Zerbi’s unveiling, talkSPORT hosts and pundits have given their verdicts on his appointment.Paul HawksbeeSpeaking on Monday’s Hawksbee and Jacobs, Paul Hawksbee explained: “Look, he did a great job at Brighton. I remember speaking to some of the people down at Brighton when he first took over and they were very excited.“Two caveats. One being that he’s already been a divisive figure.“Some of the fan groups at Spurs weren’t happy about comments he made about Mason Greenwood while at Marseille. They’ve had a ‘No to De Zerbi’ campaign.”He continued: “Day one, I think you’ll have to qualify some of the things he said because we don’t need any more division among the fan base. We’ve had enough of that already.“The other thing is, one of his problems at Brighton was he wanted more involvement in transfers.A Spurs fan group has already campaigned against appointing De Zerbi as managerGetty“I think he is quite impatient and he expects good players to be bought for him to allow him to do his job. Tottenham’s track record is going to change drastically on that front.“In all the years of ENIC, it has not been good. This is how they’ve got themselves into this mess, by not paying the wages and not signing the talent.”‘Screams desperation’Fellow Spurs fan Majestic has also revealed his stance on the decision to replace Tudor with De Zerbi.Speaking to talkSPORT.com, he explained: “Tottenham Hotspur signing Roberto De Zerbi as the new manager I’ve got to be honest with you, screams desperation.“I agree De Zerbi is a competent manager and a good tactician, but let’s be real here. Thomas Frank, everyone thought we were too good for him. What’s he ever done? He’s only been at Brentford.“Yes, De Zerbi got Brighton to sixth in his first season in the Premier League, but after that he finished 11th. What else has he done?Appointing the ‘volatile’ De Zerbi ‘screams desperation’ according to MajesticGetty“And for me, Spurs have played all of their cards on the table that they’re in a position now where De Zerbi, who already rejected them, is able to hold all of the aces and ask for a five-year deal.“For me, the real problem with De Zerbi is his temperament. The man’s got a reputation for being volatile, clashing with the press and falling out with other managers, losing it on the touchline.“And when you’re fighting for your life in a relegation battle, what do you need? You need a calm, cool, steady hand. You need someone to stabilise the ship, not someone who’s gonna blow a gasket at the first setback.“And here’s what really annoys me about this board. We had the likes of Tim Sherwood, Harry Redknapp, even ex-England international manager Glenn Hoddle. That’s right, club legend Glenn Hoddle all put their hand up to say, ‘I’ll help out and keep this club up for free’. And what does the board do? Completely ignore him.“And they hand De Zerbi one of the best paid positions in English football on a five-year deal.“That’s not football thinking, that’s not for the fans, that’s not for the good of the club, that’s for their own pure vanity. That’s the board saying we know best, even though they got it completely wrong with Igor Tudor and Thomas Frank.Spurs fans have not seen their side win a Premier League match since DecemberGetty“Spurs, well, the board, have been bullied into this by their own blind pride. And you know what? That might be the move right there that sends Tottenham Hotspur down to the Championship. And the scary part is, I don’t know when you get back.”Too little too late?Meanwhile, Sonny Snelling told talkSPORT.com: “I have mixed feelings about it. This is probably the appointment that should’ve been made before Igor Tudor because you would’ve had more games for De Zerbi to get his style of play across.“What we saw from his Brighton and Marseille teams were quite revolutionary. Pep Guardiola said he was one of the most influential coaches over the last 20 years. The way he used to do those box formations, the 4-2-2-2 was amazing.“But Tottenham don’t have the players to play this formation at present. If he came in over the summer and overhauled the squad you’d back it even more.“Think of Guglielmo Vicario and Antonin Kinsky, are they confident enough with the ball to play it out the back? Our midfield, even Conor Gallagher and Joao Palhinha, Rodrigo Bentancur, Archie Gray, Pape Matar Sarr, are any of them confident enough on the ball to dictate the play? I’m not so sure on that.“When it’s fully ticking there’s no doubt De Zerbi is one of the best coaches in world football.Snelling doubts whether Spurs’ players are ‘confident’ enough for De Zerbi’s tactical approachGetty“My other issue is can he get on with the board? He falls out with most boards he works with, he doesn’t last long at football clubs. “A lot to be concerned about but the proof will be in the pudding.”
