Choosing the Right PlayStation 5

The PlayStation 5 console is the one to get if you want the first shot to play hit PlayStation franchises like The Last of Us, God of War, or the upcoming Marvel’s Wolverine. Many of these games will launch on PCs eventually, but the PlayStation 5 is where you can play them first, so it’s a great choice for dedicated gamers of all ages and interests. The PS5 launched in the fall of 2020, and three years later, Sony replaced it with the PlayStation 5 Slim and PlayStation 5 Slim Digital Edition. These revamped consoles are slightly smaller, but they’re not meaningful upgrades from the previous-model PS5, and if you already own an original version, there’s no reason to splurge on either Slim model. However, Sony now offers the enhanced PlayStation 5 Pro, which plays all the same games but often provides graphical benefits and some other minor quality-of-life improvements.Effective April 2, 2026, Sony will once again increase the prices of all PlayStation 5 consoles. Citing “continued pressures in the global economic landscape,” the PlayStation 5 Slim and PlayStation 5 Slim Digital Edition will increase by $100 to $650 and $600, respectively, while the PlayStation 5 Pro will now retail for $900. Previous price increases were attributable to tariffs levied by the Trump administration, but these new price increases are due in large part to runaway cost increases in RAM, storage, and chipset manufacturing due to radically increased demand in the AI industry. Additionally, in the fall of 2025, in order to avoid more price increases, Playstation reduced the included storage for PlayStation 5 Slim Digital Edition models from 1 TB to 825 GB. Given current market and economic conditions, we still recommend the PS5 if you own an older console, but deals may be harder to find. Here’s everything you need to know about the latest PlayStations — including which one you should buy.
