Software Sector Full Analysis / Why the S&P 500 is downiShares Expanded Tech-Software Sector ETFBATS:IGVThe-white-goatOver the start of this year, we’ve seen the software sector decline, which is putting pressure on the US500 and dragging it lower. The software sector, together with the hardware sector, forms two major subsectors within the tech sector. Software is currently under pressure mainly due to structural changes driven by AI. Lower expected future profits are being priced in as competition increases and margins become more uncertain. Top stocks in the software sector - MSFT - ORCL - ADBE - CRM The situation with ORCL is that it is down significantly from its ATH, partly because Larry Ellison is currently engaging in very aggressive capex spending. You can quantify this in the chart below. It models the returns of the underlying stock across four regimes and determines which factor contributed most to the price movement: - Index movements (US500) - Sector movements (XLK) - Subsector movements (software, IGV) - Fundamentals This can be interpreted as Larry Ellison making a large forward-looking bet. If the software sector gets repriced and stabilizes, the company could be a strong performer over the coming years. Technical Analysis Monthly timeframe On the monthly timeframe, we currently have one large active structure where the target region has not yet been reached. Price is in the second B–C correction area, and a reversal to the upside is expected from here. Weekly timeframe Here, price is in the target region of a bearish structure, which overlaps with the monthly trend reversal area. This creates confluence, increasing the probability of a reversal. Daily chart There are currently no active structures. A new structure would only activate if price breaks the last high (blue line). The projected target area would align with the broader total correction level, creating a potential trade setup. Quantification insight The following chart shows that the subsector (software) is the primary source of weakness, not the broader tech sector or the index.
