The Fertilizer Platform Ghana (FPG) has expressed concern over the lack of clarity surrounding the fertiliser component of government’s flagship Feed Ghana Programme. The Platform said while it welcomed government’s commitment to modernising agriculture, ensuring food security and reducing import dependency, the absence of clear guidelines on fertilizer supply posed significant challenges. In a statement issued in Accra, the FPG noted that key stakeholders within the fertilizer value chain had not been adequately engaged or informed about the framework for implementation. It said fertilizer remained a critical input in achieving increased agricultural productivity and sustainable growth, making policy clarity essential. The Platform indicated that the lack of direction on procurement, distribution and supplier engagement created uncertainty within the sector. It warned that this could affect the planning and coordination of fertilizer supply to meet farmers’ needs. The statement said the concerns were possible delays in fertilizer availability, especially as the farming season approached. It also pointed to the risk of price instability and inefficiencies in the distribution system. The Platform said the global geopolitical tensions, including the Israel-United States and Iran conflict, could affect fertilizer supply chains. It said these challenges limited the ability of suppliers to align with government objectives under the programme. The FPG called on government and the Ministry of Food and Agriculture to provide detailed guidelines on the fertilizer support policy. It urged authorities to engage industry players to clarify roles, responsibilities and timelines for implementation. The Platform also called for transparency in procurement processes and inclusiveness in stakeholder participation. It recommended the introduction of a fertilizer declaration regime to ensure accurate tracking of available quantities in the country. The statement emphasised that a well-coordinated fertilizer strategy was critical to the success of the Feed Ghana Programme. The FPG assured the government of its readiness to collaborate to ensure the timely and affordable supply of agricultural inputs to farmers across the country.
